Glenn Thompson seemingly supports gay marriage after voting against codifying equality in federal law
On Friday, a gay couple’s wedding in Southwest Philadelphia had a controversial speaker who happened to be the father of one of the two grooms.
What was interesting about the father was that he, a Pennsylvania Republican Rep. Glenn Thompson was the one who voted against marriage equality just three days prior to his son’s wedding.
The groom’s father wore a black tuxedo and black bowtie to toast his son and new son-in-law, both of whom sat before him, wearing wedding white blazers.
The lawmaker stood next to his wife, the congressman told the guests that he was incredibly grateful and felt blessed to celebrate the men’s marriage. Glenn was also thrilled to welcome a new member of his family.
He further revealed that he as a parent hopes and prays that his child stays healthy, and finds his way.
Thompson said that he is happy that his child found one true love: someone to grow old with.
In the wedding speech, Thompson praised his son’s choice of a husband and said:
“We love it when they find their one true love, especially when they become a part of our families then. That’s what we’re rooting for,”

People criticized Glenn for his hypocritical behavior
Many of the guests at the wedding knew and some would later learn that Thompson, just three days earlier, had voted against a bill that would protect marriage equality.
In a much simpler sense, Thompson was against gay marriage. He was one of the 157 House Republicans who voted against the Respect for Marriage Act.
Several members started calling Thompson’s act hypocritic because he had not only attended the nuptials after no vote but also delivered a speech.
People also pointed out how Glenn said that the celebration was a really good experience.
Pointing out the double standards of the politicians, one of the members said:
“I think the word should definitely get out there,”
“These politicians need to be exposed for who they really are.”
The lawmaker’s press secretary did not respond to a request for comment. However, they had confirmed to various media outlets that Mr. Glenn had attended the wedding.
They said:
“Congressman and Mrs. Thompson were thrilled to attend and celebrate their son’s marriage on Friday night as he began this new chapter in his life,”
“The Thompsons are very happy to welcome their new son-in-law into their family.”
