Graham Thorpe, English cricketer, died on 4 August 2024 due to suicide!
Graham Thorpe was just 55 years of age when he passed away. He was a British cricketer who played for England and Surrey. Now, his family has come forward to reveal the cause of Graham’s death. He died by suicide, they said.
Graham Thorpe and his suicidal death
Last week, English cricketer, Graham Thorpe died. He was an excellent batter and played for England and Surrey. He was just 55 years of age at the time of his death. Graham is survived by his wife, Amanda and two daughters: one was Amanda’s from a past relationship and second was born to them in 2005. He also has a son born November 1996 and a daughter born April 1999 to his first ex-wife, Nicola (September 1995 to 2001).
Amanda gave an interview to The Times External where she revealed that her husband was suffering from severe depression and took his own life. Amanda said:
“Despite having a wife and two daughters whom he loved and who loved him, he did not get better,”
She continued:
“He was so unwell in recent times and he really did believe that we would be better off without him and we are devastated that he acted on that and took his own life.”
“For the past couple of years, Graham had been suffering from major depression and anxiety. This led him to make a serious attempt on his life in May 2022, which resulted in a prolonged stay in an intensive care unit.”
“Despite glimpses of hope and of the old Graham, he continued to suffer from depression and anxiety, which at times got very severe. We supported him as a family and he tried many, many treatments but unfortunately none of them really seemed to work.”
Family wants to launch a Foundation
Amanda and her daughters want to start a foundation in the name of Graham. By doing so, they want to raise an awareness in people about depression and anxiety and how to tackle it. Kitty, their eldest daughter who is 22 said:
“We are not ashamed of talking about it,”
“There is nothing to hide and it is not a stigma. We were trying to help him get better before and trying to protect him, which is why we said nothing.”
“This is the time now to share the news, however horrible it is. We’ve wanted to be able to talk and share and we’d now like to raise awareness, too.”
Graham and his career and death
The cricketer had been part of 100 tests and 82 one-day matches at international level. He was a good batsman and had scored 6744 runs in tests and 2380 runs in one-day international matches. His average score was 44.66 runs per match. He had 16 centuries in his career.
Graham retired in 2005. He took up the job of a coach first in Australia and later in England and Surrey.
Graham pushed himself in front of a running train on 4 August 2024 and died on the spot. Tributes and condolences poured in for the departed soul from all over. The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) stated:
“Graham Thorpe was more than one of England’s finest-ever batters, he was a beloved member of the cricket family and revered by fans all over the world.”
Joe Root, English batsman and former captain of national team expressed:
“Graham was a hero, mentor and so much more.”

And former English skipper, Michael Vaughan was grateful to Graham for all the advices he gave him throughout his career. He added:
“You were a great player and a brilliant team-mate. You have gone far too young but you leave as an England cricket legend.”
