He had once told People:
“I think it’s hard to stay married anywhere, but if you marry the right person, it might work out. We give each other a natural sense of support for whatever the other wants to pursue.”
The secret of a happy married life according to Tom Hanks is remaining honest and truthful.
Their support for each other
In 2015, Rita was diagnosed with breast cancer and had to undergo bilateral breast removal and reconstructive surgery. Tom Hanks had left all his work and was beside his love and wife during those hours of need. It means a lot for Rita who feels happy that she has such a loving husband.
Rita too is very caring and looks after all his health needs. Tom Hanks was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes mellitus. In 2013, he had come on the CBS show ‘The Late Show with David Letterman’ to promote his movie ‘Captain Phillips’. During the show, he opened up about his blood sugar problem.
He said:
“I went to the doctor and he said ‘You know those high blood sugar numbers you’ve been dealing with since you were 36? Well, you’ve graduated. You’ve got type 2 diabetes, young man,'”
Diabetes mellitus type 2 or adult-onset diabetes mellitus is a chronic condition in which there is a relative deficiency of insulin ( a hormone that pushes sugar into the body cells) or resistance of body cells to the action of the insulin produced. This leads to high blood sugar and its ill effects.
It may present with vague or specific complaints such as passing large volumes of urine, more hunger, loss of weight, fatigue, the vulnerability to infections, or vision blurring. Sometimes it might be an accidental pickup when routine blood sugar is tested for any reason.
Genes, sedentary lifestyles, obesity, or such factors contribute to it. Specific drugs can control blood sugar. Insulin is rarely needed during surgery and infections. Tight control of sugar is important to prevent complications due to high blood sugar in the eyes, heart, kidneys, and blood vessels.
The expert opinion
Tom Hanks feels that he did not pay proper attention to his health which led to this condition. He said:
“I’m part of the lazy American generation that has blindly kept dancing through the party and now finds ourselves with a malady,”
He also regretted:
“I was a total idiot.”
Tom Hanks has been known to be drastically increase or decrease his weight for his various roles. Dr. Holly Phillips, CBS News medical contributor opined that these extreme weight fluctuations could have led to Tom Hank’s diabetes mellitus. She said:
“He’ll have to watch what he eats very closely, he’ll need to exercise regularly but there’s no reason he can’t live a perfectly normal life. In dramatic weight gain and dramatic weight loss, the equilibrium of the body is just completely off. So that might predispose him to developing type 2 diabetes later.”
