Hair care-how often to do hair shampooing?
- There has been a constant debate on the frequency at which one needs to shampoo his or her hair.
- Now dermatologists reveal the answer on how soon or late should hair shampooing be done.
Read on for details on it.
Hair shampooing frequency
For many years now, the debate has been ranging on he often to do hair shampooing. Hair washing is a must but what people cannot decide is how often to wash the hair. Should it be done weekly or daily?
Dermatologists state that there is no one answer to this question. The board-certified dermatologist Gary Goldenberg, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York says:
“It depends on your hair and activity level,”
But the cleansing of hair and scalp is required. The scalp cells keep shedding and the oil glands in the scalp also secrete oil and sebum which causes a greasy feel. Additionally, this oil also entraps a lot of dirt that sticks to the hair and should be cleaned periodically.
Hair type and hair wash
American Academy of Dermatology and Dr. Joshua Zeichner, director of cosmetic and clinical research in dermatology at Mount Sinai Hospital, New York City state:
“If you have oily hair, it is perfectly safe and appropriate to wash your hair daily. If you have dry hair or a sensitive scalp, however, you certainly can space out hair washing as needed.”
Dr. Gary says that too often hair wash can strip your hair of its natural sebum and softness. This is worse with dry hair. Hence it could cause hair to get brittle and break easily.
He adds:
“If you’re super active, sweat can build up and help capture dirt in your hair, so you would need to shampoo more often,”
As you age, scalp oil production decreases, and therefore the frequency of hair washing can be decreased. A good guide is as follows:
- Oily hair: Shampoo daily or every other day.
- Dry, coarse hair: Shampoo once a week. Some use only water and use a conditioner every few days.
- Fine hair: Hair wash daily or every other day.
Should you use shampoo and what kind?
Dr. Joshua states:
“The goal of shampooing is to help remove dirt, oil, and hair care products from the hair shafts themselves,”
And Dr. Gary says about the choice of shampoo:
“Most shampoo have surfactants, a soapy substance that helps remove oil and dirt. Other products are then added to give shampoo its scent and feel. Shampoos for oily hair will have more of the soap, whereas those for dry hair are more gentle.”
And Dr. Joshua adds:
“Some of the shampoos designed for dry hair may end up weighing down fine hair, making it feel limp. But clarifying shampoos (which work to remove build-up on your scalp and strands) can be overly stripping for people with dry or coarse hair.”
