Hawaii to Pass a Law Committing to the Paris Climate Accord, Becomes the First State TO Do So
- The state of Hawaii has become the first American state to validate the legislation to bring its environmental standards in line with the Paris Climate Accord
- In this session, we will be learning about the law and its implications
Passing the Law
The officials of the state of Hawaii said on Wednesday, that they will be enacting the legislation to bring its environmental standards in line with the Paris Climate Accord, less than a week after President Donald Trump announced that the United States would withdraw from the global agreement.
Likewise, on Tuesday, David Ige, the Governor of Hawaii signed a proposal that requires the state officials to ploy a response to climate change that aligns the state with the standards and goals of the Paris pact, as per Scott Glenn, an environmental adviser to the governor.
The Reason Behind the Law
“People come to Hawaii to enjoy its environment,”
Further, Glenn said,
“When climate change is threatening our reefs and threatening our weather … then it’s threatening our economy, too.”
While Hawaii already has strong environmental rules, the new law is the first to directly broach the standards of the Paris Agreement, said Glen Andersen. Anderson keeps track of energy and climate issues at the National Conference of State Legislatures.
Alongside setting climate change as a priority for the state, the proposal also creates a state commission committed to studying climate change and putting out comprehensive plans for responding both to sea-level rise and climate change as a whole, with the proviso that the plans orient with the Paris Climate Agreement.
Fight Back Against Trump’s Decision?
Trump said on Thursday that the 2015 climate agreement jeopardized millions of jobs and productivity. He also said that he would start a multi-year process to withdraw from the deal, signed by almost every other nation on Earth.
On the very same day, the governors of Washington, California, and New York also went on to announce the creation of a “climate alliance” of states that would remain devoted to the Paris goals. Ige joined that alliance on Friday.
A profuse preponderance of scientists says that human activity, including the burning of oil, gas, and coal, is the main driver of the rise in global temperatures.
