The number of people trying the opioid drug is increasing, despite the obvious dangers. Hollywood celebrities who have spoken openly about their prior drug use shed light on the risks and complications that can occur.
Here are some celebrities who spoke openly about their experiences with the drug.
1) Dennis Quaid
Dennis William Quaid is an American actor known for a wide variety of dramatic and comedic roles. The actor when he first came to Hollywood in the 80s, hit the cocaine bandwagon. By the time he was starring in “The Big Easy” in 1987.
Before he went to rehab he was using two grams of cocaine a day.
He said,
“I was basically doing cocaine pretty much on a daily basis during the ’80s… I spent many, many a night screaming at God to ‘Please take this away from me, I’ll never do it again because I’ve only got an hour before I have to be at work…’ I saw myself either dead or losing everything that meant anything to me.”
2) Demi Lovato
When she first used cocaine she was only 17 years old. Her father who was abusive to her mother was also reportedly diagnosed with bipolar disorder and schizophrenia.
Her father was also an alcoholic and addict. In July 2018 the media was flooded with reports that Demi Lovato had suffered an overdose. The overdose caused Lovato to suffer 3 strokes and a heart attack. She suffered brain damage from the strokes, has blind spots in her vision, and is now unable to drive.
She received dialysis at the hospital as doctors tried to save her, and they did even after she suffered multiple organ failures.
3) Drew Barrymore
Drew made headlines in 1989 by going to rehab at just 13 and announcing she was an addict. The institution suggested she legally separate from her mother and be declared an adult at 14. Barrymore says the experts there believed that if she were to go back out into the world, she’d be better off on her own. Today, she has no regrets about her time there.
She told,
“It was a very important thing to experience for me. It was very humbling, very quiet. Maybe it was necessary because I came out of there a more respectful person. And my parents didn’t teach me that, and life wasn’t teaching me that. I came out in a very different way… but I still was me.”
4) Daniel Radcliffe
The star of the Harry Potter franchise is another young actor for whom sudden wealth and fame brought personal problems. When he was filming Franchise he was between addiction and the movie role.
He told,
“If I went out and if I got drunk, I’d suddenly be aware of there being interest in that because it’s not just a drunk guy, it’s ‘Oh, Harry Potter’s getting drunk in the bar, carried some kind of interest for people and also a slightly mocking interest. It’s inherently funny for people.”
5) Robert Downey Jr.
The iron man tried marijuana at a party when he was only eight years old. He continued starring in films even as his struggle with alcohol and drug use began to take hold of his life off the set. Downey was able to stay sober while working on a film for some time but would soon fall off the wagon and begin using again, going on days-long benders.
He said,
“like I have a loaded gun in my mouth and I like the taste of metal… I don’t drink these days. I am allergic to alcohol and narcotics. I break out in handcuffs.”
