Is Hollywood doing enough for the climate change crisis?
- The climate change crisis is real and serious and looming high.
- But the political world is turning a blind eye to it.
- The entertainment world has a pivotal role to draw the attention of the world to the seriousness of the situation.
- But even Hollywood is not doing enough for it.
It has been fifteen years since the movie The Day After Tomorrow on this subject hit the cinema houses. But since then nothing has been created highlighting the importance of this change for the world.
The Trump-era movies
Donald Trump became the President of the United States in 2016 and since then there has been a lot of catastrophe in the USA. Trump-era brought with it more subjects for the films of Hollywood.
These include authoritarian rule, immigration issues, police brutalities, and other social injustices. Movies made on these current subjects are begun trickling in.
BlacKkKlansman premiered at Cannes this year. And then, there are another called Knives Out which debuts in Toronto.
Hollywood is doing its share to bring to the people of the USA as well as the world the most current hot problems which plague the democratic country of the USA.
It has made sci-fi, satire, and comedy films on these subjects. It has spoken about the present issues but when will Hollywood talk about other environmental problems which could have far-reaching implications for the future world?
Hollywood and climate change!
But Hollywood has completely ignored the most pressing issue of this century-that of climate change and its aftermath if nothing is done about it.
It is the need of the hour and not enough is been done for it except talking about it. No strong and prompt action has been taken to halt the temperatures soaring high to destructive levels.
Climate change has altered life so drastically. It has led to floods, and super storms, and forced people to migrate in great numbers. Despite the obvious, there are not many films on this topic in the recent past.
Some isolated Hollywood films on climate change
Hollywood has tried to pitch in for this issue of climate change. But the films are just a fraction of what actually is required. In 2017, Dean Devlin made the film called Geostorm.
It talked about a weather-controlling satellite device that gets hijacked by some bad guys. They then use it to create havoc and destruction in the universe and Earth. There are heat spells and severe cold dips which grip the world.
A fictitious character a scientist portrayed by Gerard Butler tries to save the world. But the movie did not click with the masses due to its incorrect portrayal of science.

The real dangers of passivity on the subject of climate change have not been portrayed yet in the cinema world. In 2004, the film The Day After Tomorrow was more direct, noble, and honest on the subject.
But except for these two movies, there are no other films that have touched on this topic. Are the producers and directors listening?
