- Pablo Escobar was a Columbian drug lord and a narco-terrorist who used to smuggle cocaine into the USA.
- He was the wealthiest criminal in the 1990s with an estimated net worth of around $ 30 billion.
- His yearly personal income was $ 21.9 billion.
He was shot dead on 2 December 1993 at Medellin, Columbia. Pablo was 44 years old at the time of his death.
His family and their role in money laundering
But hell broke loose for his widowed wife, son, and daughter after his death. They tried to seek asylum from other countries but failed. In 1995, they fled Colombia.
They first went to Mozambique, then Brazil, and later took shelter in Argentina but under different names. His widow Maria Henao took up the name of María Isabel Santos Caballero and set up her real estate business there.
Her son Juan Sebastian acquired the alias of Sebastian Marroquin. One of Maria’s business partners found out that she was the widow of Pablo Escobar and alerted the police.
She was caught and investigated for her finances. She was released since no link could be found between her funds and any illegal activities.
But now, it has been reported by the Argentine Security Ministry and Colombia’s Information and Analysis Unit (UIAF) that wife Henao and son Pablo Escobar Jr. were indeed involved in assisting money laundering to the tune of $ 15 million.
The concerned authorities at Columbia and Argentina have evidence that both were alleged links between Colombian drug trafficker Jose Bayron Piedrahita Ceballos and 1-2 unnamed businessmen in Argentina.
Ceballos is currently in prison in Columbia and the US authorities have put in papers for his extradition on charges of drug trafficking and corruption.

As per the investigations carried out at Argentina, Colombia and the US, it is alleged that Maria and Sebastian facilitated contacts so that Ceballos could hide his illegal activities involving Argentine corporations.
There is proof that Ceballos had laundered money for several drug trafficking networks. For the help provided by Maria and Sebastian, they used to get 4.5% of the total money laundered through the companies as their fee. Incredible!
Pablo’s entry into the ‘underworld’
Pablo is said to have entered this illegal and criminal world at quite a young age. He left college halfway through and plunged into illegal trade. He used to sell contraband cigarettes and also fake lottery tickets.
He then got involved with motor car thefts. He is also said to have smuggled gravestones for resale in the market. He used to kidnap people and hold them for ransom.
He then started selling powdered cocaine himself. He was the first to establish an illegal route in 1975 for smuggling cocaine into the USA. It was alleged that as much as 70-80 tons of cocaine were been shipped into the US from Colombia every month. His nexus was very strong and has resulted in a lot of killings of the police force and politicians, lawmen, and locals.
There were rival groups also involved and Pablo Escobar was on their hit list. Pablo was married with two children but he also had a number of extramarital affairs. In spite of all the infidelity displayed by Pablo, his wife had stood by his side as a support and had said that he was good at heart and loved her and her children a lot.

His death
He was on the police radar. They managed to intercept his radiotelephone transmissions and found him holed up in Medellin. They cornered him and his bodyguard who tried to escape by jumping rooftops to reach a back street.
But the police were agiler and they fired at the duo. Pablo was shot in the leg and torso. There was also a gunshot through his ear.
It is not known who fired this gunshot. But police claim that it was the bullet from their gun. Whereas the close relatives of Pablo claim that he had shot himself and committed suicide to prevent from landing into the hands of the police.
They say that Pablo before his death had many times reiterated that if he is cornered, he would kill himself by shooting through his ears.
