Ivanka Trump Needs a Reality Check

A new report by The Guardian has revealed the savage working conditions of PT Buma, a garment company that provides material for big brands like Ivanka Trump’s.

Oblivious to reality, though, Ivanka’s recent book Women Who Work seems to consist of vagaries, cliches, and women-targeted branding.

Workers in the Indonesian arm of PT Buma are paid the lowest wages in the country, and some parents have to send their children away because they cannot afford to live with them.

Sure, they get three months of paid maternity leave and a bonus if they don’t take menstrual leave, but considering how bad working conditions and wages are, the workers aren’t really getting a great deal out of this.

Broadly also writes about workers not being paid for their overtime labor, and the Chinese company that manufactures her shoes is apparently moving operations to Ethiopia, where the minimum wage is even lower.

Ivanka, however, remained silent about the allegations, but her brand released a statement distancing itself to the scandal. Meanwhile, a labor activist who was trying to investigate human rights abuse at her Chinese shoe factory has been detained, and two others have gone missing.

As an author of a book that is apparently about women’s issues, it’s strange (but no surprise) that Trump isn’t a fan of paying her workers anything above a minimum wage.

A look inside the shoe factory in the Chinese province of Guangdong shows that it isn’t a super-comfortable place to work, either.

Last month, Ivanka made headlines by praising Saudi Arabia’s progress with women’s rights after it donated $100 million to the World Bank, but Saudi Arabia doesn’t have a fantastic track record with women’s rights today, either. Besides, she’s surprised by the ‘vicious’ attacks against her father, President Donald Trump.

Sounds like somebody needs to get a reality check, especially where workers in her own factories are concerned. Perhaps her next great feminist text could enlighten us?

Ivanka Trump, “Didn’t Expect the ‘Viciousness’ of D.C.”

Ivanka Trump Says She Didn’t Expect the ‘Viciousness’ of D.C.

Ivanka Trump said Monday that she was “a little blindsided” by the ferocity of D.C. she’s witnessed since her father, President Donald Trump, took office.

Trump appeared on Fox News Channel’s “Fox & Friends” on Monday morning to discuss U.S. employment, which the White House is promoting through what it’s named Workforce Development Week.

She said she’s been trying to keep her “head down” and work while keeping her difficulties in perspective with those of struggling Americans, and added that “it is hard.”

Trump said,

There is a level of viciousness that I was not expecting. I was not expecting the intensity of this experience. But this isn’t supposed to be easy. My father and this administration intend to be transformative. And we want to do big, bold things.”

When asked about reports of internal tension for her husband, senior adviser Jared Kushner, she said he’s also been working hard despite negative commentary.

Trump said,

“There is a 24-hour news cycle that’s gets fed by, and is encouraged by, a lot of salacious details, but at the end of the day, we’re all focused on the work, and that’s very true for Jared. He’s somebody who just likes to get things done.”

At another point in the appearance, Trump echoed a tweet from her father when she said he felt “very vindicated” after former FBI Director James Comey’s testimony on Thursday.

Ivanka Trump’s ‘Secret’ Meeting with Planned Parenthood

According to a report from Politico, first daughter and assistant to the president Ivanka Trump met with Planned Parenthood’s Cecile Richards in the weeks following her father’s inauguration. Trump apparently requested the meeting in order to seek “common ground on the contentious issue of abortion.”

Planned Parenthood confirmed the meeting to Jezebel, saying in a statement that Richards used the sit-down to explain what the Republican platform of defunding Planned Parenthood really means.

The purpose of the meeting, from Planned Parenthood’s perspective, was to make sure that Ivanka Trump fully understood the important role Planned Parenthood plays in providing health care to millions of people and why it would be a disastrous idea to block people from accessing care at Planned Parenthood,” the organization said. “It was also important to clear up any misinformation regarding the Medicaid reimbursements Planned Parenthood receives and explain that Planned Parenthood is reimbursed the same way hospitals are,” Planned Parenthood added.

What’s become increasingly clear is that Ivanka Trump either is completely unable to sway her father even though she claims that he listens to her or that she simply doesn’t care about women’s rights.

Indeed, even though she might join international leaders on panels about women in the workforce, the lives and well-being of women appear to be little more than yet another branding opportunity.

Ivanka Trump might deny that she’s “complicit” and cry “feminism,” but what’s clear is that her politics are pure Trump and nothing more.

Ivanka Trump Interprets Complicity As Being a ‘Force for Good’

In her first televised interview since her father took the White House and since she became Assistant to the President, Ivanka Trump and CBS News’s Gayle King sat down for a chat.

She further added,

If being complicit is…wanting to be a force for good and to make a positive impact then I’m complicit,” she says with a completely straight face. “I don’t know that the critics who may say that of me if they found themselves in this very unique and unprecedented situation that I am now in, would do any differently than I am doing…I don’t know what it means to be complicit, but you know, I hope time will prove that I have done a good job and much more importantly that my father’s administration is the success that I know it will be.”
