Jacob Collins Levy speaks about the tall order as a King In ‘The White Princess’! What are his opinions?
  • The White Princess has said the star-crossed story of King Henry VII and Elizabeth of New York as well
  • The White Princess was ambitious in recasting both of the leads, Henry VII and Elizabeth of  New York

These leads were adapted from Phillipa Gregory’s bestselling novels. The new chapter on Starz, consisting of eight episodes, is a continuation of the story of the Yorks and Tudors as the Wars of the Roses come to a close.

Jacob Collins-Levy as King Henry VII

Even if the part came unexpectedly, Jacob Collins-Levy has done an amazing job acting as King Henry VII. He said:

“I was working at a warehouse. It just didn’t seem like something that would actually happen. I’d done a few parts in films in Australia, so I was kinda just waiting, auditioning for different things. Then [The White Princess] came up and I was on a flight to England to audition for the part.”

Collins also informed that The White Princess tried to bring a whole new cast to tell the story. According to him:

“We were telling a different story, with characters that go through a different journey, and also at different points in their lives. If you were a die-hard fan of [The White Queen], there might have been a period of acclimation. But after a while the fans would come to see [these characters] as new people.”

It was a tough job to compress all the important historical moments within just eight episodes. Collin had a kind of obsession with that period. He said:

“I’m in no way an academic, I’m interested in feelings and the beauty of a particular period. I found it so fascinating and I didn’t know much about it. You get to explore how it must have felt to be in that kind of period.”

As The White Princess doesn’t consist of any traditional love story, Jacob Collins-Levy explains the unique relationship your characters have and also the journey which they take in this miniseries. Jacob Collins-Levy said:

“Well it’s an arranged marriage first of all, and it’s for political reasons why they’re put together, and I don’t think either of them really wanted it at first. And it’s something that kinda grows as they can complement each other as king and queen, and I think they’re very similar. There’s a certain arc to their romance that starts very much as a strained kind of thing and then they start to come together in the middle.”

Expectations about historical drama

Jodie Comer and Jacob Collins-Levy, of them, were asked about any surprising thing for them about their characters in their role.

The surprising matter might also be regarding some of their expectations about historical data.  To this question of the journalist, Jacob and Jodie explained their expectations regarding historical drama.

According to Jacob Collins-Levy:

For Henry I think I was surprised … he’s not a king, he wasn’t raised like someone like Edward was, he was brought up to … he raised to be a king but he was raised in exile, so to not play a king is an interesting thing. He’s a foreigner, he’s not English, but he’s the King of England, and so there was a really interesting thing for me about finding someone who everyone is going “This isn’t an Englishman, this is someone who has lived over in Europe and in exile, why is he the king?” so not playing a king was a surprising thing.

Jodie Comer also added:

“I didn’t realize that you literally could not be left alone, you would have ladies in waiting, and they would be in your bedroom, they would sleep in your bedroom, they would go into the toilet with you — they were with you 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I just didn’t realize that, it must have been so intense. Even acting when there are 3 people following you, you’re constantly aware of it, and especially with all of the goings on and the secrets. There must have been a lot of interesting conversations that were overheard, and I think that’s one thing that surprised me.”
