Jada Braxton, 17 Won Miss Photogenic Title At The Miss Saraland Pageant: “Autism is not an outward appearance”
- Jada Braxton is a native of Alabama who has recently become a pageant queen
- She won the Miss Photogenic 2022 title in her school pageant
- At the age of 7, she was diagnosed with autism
An Alabama teenager, Jada Braxton won the Miss Photogenic title at the Miss Saraland pageant on January 22.
This is a huge success for Jada because her autism makes it difficult for her to maintain direct eye contact, especially in photos.
Following the pageant, Braxton told Fox 10,
“I was surprised, and I was glad they called my name to be Miss Photogenic,”
Jada’s mom Danisha Braxton said, this is a huge accomplishment for the autistic community as well. She said,
“By her being autistic, one of the characteristic traits is not being able to make direct eye contact, especially when she’s taking pictures. For her to win just based off of her picture is just outstanding.”
At the age of seven, Braxton was diagnosed with autism, a spectrum of disorders that affects how people communicate and interact with the world.
She is an inspiration to other autistic girls. Presently, she is in her junior high school year. She shared that she wants to become a model in the future.
Jada’s mother recalled how, when Jada was younger she could count to 10, and couldn’t finish her ABC song. Danisha is so proud of her daughter who knock down barriers and educate her peers on autism.
What is autism? How does a person get autism?
Autism is a long-term developmental disorder that impacts people’s capacity to communicate and engage with others.
It affects people in different ways such as a person’s social skills, communications, relationships, and self-regulation. Every Autistic person is different from each other because of which autism is described as a ‘spectrum’.
Similarly, it is diagnosed more often in boys than in girls. If a person has autism, the symptoms of ASD usually appear between the ages of 12 and 24 months in early childhood.
The symptoms of ASD are divided into two categories,
- Communication and social interaction issues
- limited or repetitive patterns of behavior or activities
The exact cause of ASD is still unknown. As per research, autism develops from a combination of genetic and nongenetic, or environmental, influences.
