RIP! Jean Knight is no longer alive among us. Mr. Big Stuff singer died on November 22, 2023, from natural causes in New Orleans, Louisiana.
She was 80 years old at the time of her death.
Veteran New Orleans broadcaster LBJ issued a statement on behalf of her family on the singer’s remembrance this past Wednesday that was subsequently confirmed by TMZ.
The statement reads,
“Jean Knight’s legacy is not a musical one; it is a testament to the enduring love between an artist, her hometown, and the fans who adored her, As we bid farewell to this iconic soulstrees, New Orleans and her global fan base join together in gratitude for the indelible mark she left on the world.”
She was acclaimed for her career by her family mentioning her stints at various record companies including JetStream Records, Stax Records, and eventually her own record label named Comstar.
Her family then concluded the statement while asking for privacy during this difficult time and expressed heartfelt gratitude to fans for their love and support.

As soon as her death was confirmed many were quick to express their deep condolence to the artist. One user tweeted on X, formerly known as Twitter, paying tribute to the singer,
“Sad news, my station was one of the first to play Mr Big Stuff! Great song, great Artist! Rest in peace.”
Another added,
“RIP Jean Knight… we’ve all sung Mr. Big Stuff a time or two!”

Jean Knight, birth name Jean Caliste, was an American R&B and soul singer. She rose to prominence for her 1971 hit single, “Mr. Big Stuff” which was released by Stax Records.
She was born on January 26, 1943, in New Orleans, Louisiana, U.S. In the mid-1960s, Knight began her musical career after being discovered by record producer Huey Meaux.
She was then signed to a recording contract at the Jet Star/Tribe record labels. Following that, she recorded four singles, however, her career slowed down by the late 1960s.
She then worked as a baker when she met songwriter Ralph Williams and with the help of him, she came in contact with record producer Wardell Quezergue.
In May of that year, Knight recorded “Mr. Big Stuff,” which reached number two on the pop charts and number one in R&B.
For the song, she was nominated for a Grammy for Best R&B Vocal Performance in the Female category.
She then signed to Soulin’s label in 1981. By 1985, she started touring consistently, and between the years she released hits like You Got the Papers but I Got the Man and a cover of My Toot Toot.
