Jessica Simpson announces divorce from Eric Johnson
Jessica Simpson and her husband of ten years, Eric Johnson call it quits.
“Eric and I have been living separately navigating a painful situation in our marriage,” Simpson told People in a statement Monday.
“Our children come first, and we are focusing on what is best for them. We are grateful for all of the love and support that has been coming our way, and appreciate privacy right now as we work through this as a family.”
This news comes barely a week after Simpson, the woman who has three children with Johnson, posted a cheerful selfie on Instagram with the tagline, “Life is short. SMILE while you still have teeth😜”.
The 44-year-old pop star had fans speculating that she would eventually divorce her husband, who is now 45, since she had not posted any photos with him since 2023.
For Johnson’s birthday in September of 2023, she shared some family birthday celebration photos on Instagram and paid tribute to him in a heartfelt caption.
“My heart is so taken with this Man, I could hardly call it my own…. We love youuuu,” she wrote.
The couple spent some time away from their children earlier this year, taking a couple trip in March. The actress tapped her Instagram to capture the great moments from their getaway, stating she “stole [her] lover” for the weekend.
According to eagle-eyed snoopers, the fashion designer has not worn her wedding ring in her social media posts since January 2024.
In addition to this, Simpson also added a picture of herself in September in a sexy lace ensemble and without the wedding ring on.
“Definitely a divorce,” said a comment on her post.
Said a follower, “Where did she hide the wedding band?”
“‘This has DIVORCE written all over it, huh?” added the third.
When did Jessica and Eric’s marriage end?
The retired NFL athlete has three children with Simpson – Maxwell, 12; Ace, 11; and Birdie, 5.
Johnson was also absent from the family photo shoot that Simpson posted on Instagram in early September, which captured their children’s first day of school.
“Maxwell, Ace, and Birdie y’all make your Mom beam with smiles and grace!” she captioned the post with no mention of her now-estranged husband.
“Keep on showin’ up for yourselves with each step of the way through this new school year!” she continued. “I’m so very proud of y’all for individually shining your light so that in return others feel the glow.”
In November, Simpson also seemingly hinted at something wrong in their marriage as she teased her return to music.
“Interviews in my Nashville music room where I unearthed my singular magic,” she captioned sultry photos of herself. “This comeback is personal, it’s an apology to myself for putting up with everything I did not deserve.”
An insider revealed days later that the “With You” singer and her husband actually “live very much separate lives.”

A short look at Simpson and Johnson’s relationship
They started dating back in May 2010 when the former athlete was still married to Keri D’Angelo, his first wife. Just six months after dating, they announced the news of their engagement.
The couple had divorced in October 2010, after which Johnson began a relationship that would lead to marriage four years later with the pop diva in June 2014.
The Open Book best-selling author and former tight-end had their two children, Maxwell, born in May 2012, and Ace, born in June 2013.
They had their first son as the ring bearer and their daughter as the flower girl during their wedding ceremony with more than 250 guests held in Montecito, California.
“A true love will never make you question yourself or what’s real,” she told PEOPLE in 2023. “Thanks to my amazing soulmate I am able to love passionately and without fear of being hurt.”
That same year, Simpson opened up about how her husband “embraces” her career.”I don’t find it hard to love anybody, but I have always thought that I was hard to love, that I was too much for people, or my schedule was too demanding,” she shared. “He knows my heart and understands my heart more than anyone I’ve ever met in my life.”
Simpson noted they’ve always felt really “easy” after having three children and tried to keep the romance alive between them.
Simpson’s previous marriage
In 2022, Simpson spoke about how communication was an important part of her marriage. “I feel like every moment with us, we’re growing as long as we’re communicating, and our love is only deepening,” she said.
“Feel like Eric and I learn from each other so much,” she added. “I feel like we’re stronger than ever now, [more] than we were even at the beginning.”
The singer also explained how their life together wasn’t without its challenges in a 2021 interview with PEOPLE.
“I think the takeaway is that it’s not easy and every day presents challenges and blessings,” she said at the time. “Life is a blessing to be lived, and the more we overthink things, the more we fall behind on our journey.”
Earlier, Nick Lachey had been married to Simpson from 2002 to 2006. And, they portrayed their lives for three seasons in the MTV reality show named Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica.
As per Jake Chesnut, the artist Open Book has had past connections with names known worldwide, such as John Mayer, apart from romance with Tony Romo, Billy Corgan, Adam Levine, and Johnny Knoxville.
