Jimmy Kimmel: host of Oscars again, this year Oscar’s goof-up and his personal life news: Read on for it here!
Jimmy will be back!
The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced that American TV host, comedian, writer, and producer Jimmy Kimmel will host the 90th Oscar awards 2018 with producers Michael De Luca and Jennifer Todd.
Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs said:
“Mike and Jennifer produced a beautiful show that was visually stunning,”
He added:
“And Jimmy proved, from his opening monologue all the way through a finale we could never have imagined, that he is one our finest hosts in Oscar history.”
Jimmy Kimmel tweeted:
“Thanks to @TheAcademy for asking me to host The #Oscars again (assuming I opened the right envelope).”
The 90th Oscar award ceremony will take place in Hollywood, Los Angeles on 4th March 2018. Jimmy Kimmel would be hosting the function for the second consecutive year and the last time such back-to-back hosting happened was in 1990-1993 when American actor, comedian, TV host, writer, director, and producer Billy Crystal hosted the Oscars for four consecutive years. He also hosted this annual event in 1997 and 1998.
This year’s Oscar award function had a disastrous ending when the wrong picture ‘La La Land’ was initially mistakenly named as the best picture of the year instead of ‘Moonlight’ which had actually won the award.
This mistake was rectified and Price Waterhouse Coopers (PwC), the accountancy firm which handles the names of the winning people apologized for the gaffe. However, Jimmy Kimmel felt that he would never be recalled back to host the Oscars.
On his part, this late-night talk show host said:
“If you think we screwed up the ending this year, wait until you see what we have planned for the 90th anniversary show!”
How the Oscars goof-up happened
Film critics have invariably criticized the Oscars for giving the award to the wrong movie. But this year this happened in the true sense of the word. Instead of ‘Moonlight’ which was supposed to win the best film award at the 89th Oscars this year, by mistake ‘La La Land’ was named the winner.
However, after 2 minutes and 22 seconds, they rectified this blunder. But in the interim period, the producers of ‘La La Land’ already started giving their acceptance speeches.
But they were gracious enough to realize the problems of the PwC people and the Academy officials on this issue and handed over the award to the true winners (Moonlight team).
Actually, the winners’ names are known only to two people from the firm. This year it was Martha Ruiz and Brian Cullinan. Each of them has one of the two full sets of envelopes that contain the names of the award winners for that category.
These two stand on either side of the stage and hand over the respective envelope to the award presenters just before they step onto the stage for the presentation.
This year, after the announcement of the Emma Stone best actress award, the other similar best actress envelope was handed erroneously to Warren Beatty (American actor and filmmaker) who was presenting the best picture award for the night.
What next?
He was confused on seeing the name of Emma Stone on the envelope. This envelope read ‘Emma Stone La La Land’. He hesitated, looked inside the envelope again to check for another card, and then showed the envelope to his co-presenter Faye Dunaway (American actress).
The audience thought he was trying to be funny and delaying the great moment. Not realizing what was going on, Faye Dunaway saw the name of the film in the envelope and loudly announced ‘La La Land’.
The producers of ‘La La Land’ came up to the stage, accepted the award, and started giving their acceptance speeches. The PwC officials and Academy people realized the grave mistake and immediately came up the stage to apologize and correct the mistake.
Things were rapidly under control but this year’s Oscars would go down in history for this disastrous ending.
What is happening on Jimmy Kimmel’s personal front?
Jimmy Kimmel’s wife Molly McNearney delivered a baby boy on 21st April 2017. Shortly after birth, the vigilant hospital nurse noticed that the baby was a bit purple and had a heart murmur. She informed the doctor.
Describing the terrible moment, Jimmy Kimmel said:
“The room started to fill up. More doctors, nurses, and equipment started coming in and they determined that he wasn’t getting enough oxygen into his blood. It’s a terrifying thing.”
The diagnostic tests revealed that his child, William (lovingly called Billy) had a complex congenital heart defect called Tetralogy of Fallot with pulmonary atresia, which would require immediate surgery. This defect happens in five out of every 10000 babies.
The baby had an emergency palliative surgery lasting three hours after which the baby is better. But the child would need another open-heart surgery when he is 3-6 months old. Billy will need the replacement of the valve in his early teens.
He was grateful to the staff and doctors of Children’s Hospital, Los Angeles where they admitted the child. He requested people to donate to noble and medical causes and asked the politicians to provide affordable care to all Americans.
Jimmy Kimmel added:
“If your baby is going to die — and it doesn’t have to — it shouldn’t matter how much money you make. I hope you never have to go there but if you do you’ll see so many kids from so many financial backgrounds being cared for so well with so much compassion.”
Returning to his jokes, Jimmy Kimmel said:
“Poor kid: Not only did he get a bad heart, he got my face,”
They brought the child home 6 days after the surgery and is doing well. Jimmy Kimmel said:
“He’s doing great. He’s eating, he’s sleeping – he peed on his mother today while she was changing his diaper. He’s doing all the things that he is supposed to do.”
