Johnny Depp receives a standing ovation for his performance in Jeanne Du Barry
Johnny Depp got the experience of a lifetime at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival.
The actor received a standing ovation from the attendees for seven long minutes despite criticisms.
After the premiere of the French biographical drama Jeanne Du Barry at the festival’s opening night on Tuesday, the actor got quite emotional as the audience cheered for his performance as King Louis XV.
Variety reported that the Pirates of the Caribbean actor tried holding back tears as he waved and expressed gratitude to the cheering audience from a balcony inside the Grand Théâtre Lumière.
Maïwenn, who directed the movie and also plays the character of the King’s lover also got so emotional that he cried happy tears and said into the mic,
“I want to share this moment with my lover, with my producer, with Le Pacte. It was a production that was difficult to finance … and I want to share this moment with all my team across the theater.”
This was one of Johnny’s rare appearances since winning his high-profile case against his ex-wife Amber Heard.
While thousands of loving and screaming fans arrived at the South of France’s popular annual film festive with supportive signs and autographs requests, there were people who were not happy with his presence there.
Fans on the internet were happy to see Johnny happy after so long. One fan wrote,
”Johnny Depp is a true Movie Star..He is always kind to all his fans..Johnny is a true gentleman…”
Another added,
”I’m so happy for Depp.”

This is Johnny’s first big appearance since winning his defamation case
He won the highly publicized defamation trial against Heard who accused him of abuse. Despite the jury siding mostly in the 59-year-old actor’s favor last summer, some of Amber’s friends are still supporting her.
The Aquaman’s friend, journalist Eve Barlow who lives in Spain with the actress called out the event for ”their history [of] supporting rapists and abusers,” adding, “#CannesYouNot.”
However, Cannes director Thierry Fremaux said that it was his decision to include Depp at the event and open ith his movie by saying that he does not care about the actor’s legal problems.
During a press conference, he said,
“I don’t know about the image of Johnny Depp in the US,”
“To tell you the truth, in my life, I only have one rule: It’s the freedom of thinking, the freedom of speech and the freedom to act within a legal framework.”
“If Johnny Depp had been banned from acting in a film, or the film was banned, we wouldn’t be here talking about it.”
Thierry added,
“If there’s one person in this world who didn’t find the least interest in this very publicized trial, it’s me.
”I don’t know what it’s about. I also care about Johnny Depp as an actor.”
