Julian Sands was an avid mountain climber and hiker
In a 2020 interview with The Guardian newspaper, Julian Sands described himself as happiest when he was “close to a mountain summit on a glorious cold morning”.
The late actor disclosed about having a close call with death in the Andes in the early 1990s when he and three other climbers became trapped in a storm at 20,000 feet in elevation.
He recalled,
“We were all in a very bad way, Some guys close to us perished. We were lucky.”
He also asserted that climbing was “about supplication and sacrifice and humility,” not ego or a “great heroic sprint for the summit.” Sands explained,
“It’s not so much a celebration of oneself but the eradication of one’s self consciousness. And so on these walks you lose yourself, you become a vessel of energy in harmony hopefully with your environment.”
Further, his manager Jackson described him as a “great friend and client”. Jackson expressed his grief on his client’s passing by writing,
“He chose interesting projects that mattered to him and was adored by everyone who worked with him. We are filled with the most beautiful memories.”
