- Famous American rapper Kanye West is known to stir up controversies!
- And he has done it again!
- It is not known whether it is a publicity stunt for his upcoming music project or if he is just been his normal self.
The rapper had praised the current President of the US Donald Trump and aligned himself with the conservative Candace Owens and also tweeted a picture of himself wearing ‘Make American Great Again’ hat.
He also criticized Obama and wrote referring to Trump:
“The mob can’t make me not love him.”
He even said that Trump is his brother.

The backlash on social media
Kanye West had been tweeting a lot in favor of Donald Trump. Many social media users did not like it and they slammed Kanye for his tweets, comments, and thinking.
John Legend had also stated that they found his statements and pictures offensive. Many of them were respectful and well-intentioned but there were many who turned angry and called Kanye West ‘mentally ill’. They felt that he was not mentally stable to be all-praises for Trump.
Kanye said that he was just making an ‘independent thought’.
Kim comes to his rescue
His wife Kim Kardashian was on his side and defended him by tweeting:
“Mental Health is no joke and the media needs to stop spitting that out so casually. Bottom line.”

Opposition to the backlash
There were many sane tweets that objected to the use of the word ‘mentally ill’.
One wrote:
“Diagnosing Kanye West with mental health issues due to his recent tweets is trivializing mental health and people who actually suffer from such, He is just another influential black man with trash opinions.”
People need to stop using “mental health” as a reason for Kanye West going off like this. He’s always spoken his mind. People just didn’t want to pay attention to all things he was saying, doing, or believing in until now.

Truly tired of people degrading mental illness and health issues to the direct cause of supporting bigotry. Kanye West’s recent pro-Trump stance isn’t because of a mental breakdown, mental illness doesn’t turn someone into a Trump supporter nor enforce those ideals.

In 2016, Kanye was admitted to the hospital for stress and exhaustion for which he had to stop his Saint Pablo concert tour.
Rapper Chance also vocalized for Kanye.
Talked to him two days ago. He’s in a great space and not affected by folk tryna question his mental or physical health. Same Ye from the Vmas, same Ye from the telethon. https://t.co/2zY3KpllV2

What do doctors say?
Stephen Hinshaw, Ph.D., a psychology professor at UC Berkeley said:
“Though it might be tempting to ‘diagnose’ or brand someone with views that you find abhorrent as ‘crazy’ or ‘psycho,’ doing so ignores the fact that mental disorders actually do exist and cause real pain and impairment—but require considerable time and effort on the part of the clinician to make an accurate diagnosis, No one can do this by reading someone’s political views.”
Only doctors and professionals can diagnose such mental conditions and it is unethical for anyone else to do so.
There are fixed criteria laid down for the diagnosis and one cannot call a person mad based on his political views.
Disagreement on some issues or points does not mean that the person who has opposite views is mad.
Hinshaw said:
“Next time you want to tell your sister or BFF that she’s insane because of an opinion she has, stop yourself and remember that mental disorders are legitimate illnesses, not insults.”
Hinshaw continued:
“Given the rampant stigma that still exists regarding mental illness, even in 2018, such unjust accusations are likely to be damaging, These are slurs against unpopular views, not accurate diagnoses of conditions like PTSD, bipolar disorder or ADHD.”
