Kate Winslet sets a new record with Avatar 2
Kate Winslet shared her experience of the special training and preparation she received for James Cameron‘s Avatar: The Way of Water. The actress set a new record by holding her breath for 7 minutes and 15 seconds underwater.
Winslet broke fellow actor Tom Cruise‘s record on a film set.
Fans were thrilled when Winslet joined hands with Cameron for the sequel, Avatar: The Way of Water.
The iconic duo worked together on the Oscar-winning film Titanic in 1997 after which Kate shot to global stardom alongside her co-star Leonardo DiCaprio.
The English actress shocked her fans when she revealed that she had held her breath for over seven minutes during a training session for the movie. For the sequel, Kate joined as a new character called Ronal. Since the majority of the film happens in the sea, almost all of the cast had to learn and practice free diving before filming their parts.
This was Kate’s first time joining hands with motion capture for her performance in the movie.
On Friday, the 47-year-old actress appeared on The Graham Norton Show where she shared a video of her training for her role with her instructor. It also shows the actress holding her breath for over 7 minutes.
Host Graham asked her how she was able to do it. Then the Mare of Easttown actress replied:
”Firstly, it is a sport. It’s not something you can try in the bath, it’s not something you can never ever do it by yourself. Actually what happens when people don’t know what they are doing, they come up and gasp, and that’s when people black out and run into trouble.”

The English actress also pointed out the breathing sequences she did to regulate her breathing. She explained:
“The training I had was three weeks of training, every single day and you learn how to literally distribute the oxygen in your body. It’s a very detailed, extraordinary process. I loved it and got really good at it,”
Graham also joked about Tom’s previous record saying:
“You know who’s running a bath right now? Tom Cruise!”
Cruise previously held the underwater record for holding his breath for 6 minutes while filming an underwater stunt for Mission: Impossible- Rogue Nation in 2015.
Talking about her new record, Winslet said:
“You don’t think you can be brave enough to learn something new when you’ve left education behind. As a woman, I felt so great about it,”
Kate also talked about how Tom might have felt after hearing she’s beaten his record. The Divergent actress joked:
“Poor Tom. I mean, I don’t know Tom at all – I’ve never met him in my life – but I’m sure he’s getting very fed up of hearing this story of how I broke his record. I loved it, though. … I was amazed how good I was at it and how I just kept getting better.”
