- American famed singer Selena Gomez, 25 had to undergo kidney transplant surgery last year due to the complications of her autoimmune lupus disease.
- It had affected her kidneys which hence needed to be replaced at the earliest.
The Kidney transplant surgery
Neither Selena Gomez nor her family had out the information about Selena’s kidney surgery until she was okay. It was after she got recovered a bit from the surgery that she took to Instagram to post on this matter.
Her best friend Francia Raisa had donated her one kidney to Selena Gomez after it matched that of Selena’s. But both Selena and Francia had a tough time coming out of the surgery.
Francia was unable to eat or drink and Selena had to undergo another surgery to set right the complication she developed after the first surgery.
Talking about it to W magazine, Francia said:
“I didn’t want to eat, I didn’t want to drink anything. Selena did have a complication, too,”
She continued:
“A few hours after our surgery, I woke up and had a text from her that said, ‘I’m really scared.’ My kidney was very active, and when she turned, she broke an artery. They had to take [Gomez] into emergency surgery and get a vein from her leg and build a new artery to keep my kidney in place. She could have died.”
The extra-cautious Selena Gomez
Selena Gomez has battled her ill health and also suffered from anxiety and depression. She is not careful after her surgery and has stopped taking alcohol. She wants to avoid any health problems due to it since it may aggravate her physical and mental issues.
She had thrown a party at her place in California last week to celebrate one of her close friend’s birthdays. But it is to be known that she told everyone that there would be no alcohol at the party and also banned guests from bringing any of their own, a source had revealed this information to the New York Times.
Selena Gomez has also spent 2 weeks in health rehab. In January 2018, Selena Gomez was at the Prive-Swiss rehab center which is located in Connecticut. She had attended this program to help her get focused on her health. It seems to be working and she is not extra-cautious about her eating, drinking, and exercise.
The health advice for Lupus
People suffering from lupus disease are advised to avoid alcohol. The Lupus Center at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital state that while people suffering from Lupus drink alcohol in moderation, liquor can change the way the body metabolizes certain medications, rushing them into the bloodstream.
On its website, Cincinnati’s Lupus Center has mentioned the following:
“This can intensify both the good and not-so-good effects of medications. Alcohol can also interfere with good nutrition, causing the body to burn up some nutrients too quickly,”
Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs which are also called NSAIDs are used typically to manage and treat lupus symptoms and illness.
These lead to stomach and intestinal irritation and in extreme cases even ulceration and bleeding. Consuming alcohol along with these medications could lead to exacerbation of this irritation and make matters worse.
