Brenton Wood, the iconic soul singer renowned for his 1967 hit “The Oogum Boogum Song,” passed away at 83.
He took his last breath early Friday morning on January 3 at his home in Moreno Valley, California, surrounded by friends and family, according to his manager and assistant, Manny Gallegos.
He said,
“He went in hos sleep peacefully. The love that he gave us. God took him the same way.”
While the exact cause of death has not been disclosed, it is reported that he died of natural causes.
However, Gallegos has conveyed Brenton Wodd’s final message to his fans, “Catch you on the rebound.”
The phrase references a song from 1967 and also serves as the title of Wood’s last tour, Catch You On The Rebound: The Last Tour, which concluded over Valentine’s Day weekend in 2024.
Shortly after the tour ended, Wood began experiencing health issues and was hospitalized in May.
A Musical Journey of Brenton Wood
Brenton Wood, whose birth name was Alfred Jesse Smith, was born on July 26, 1941, in Shreveport, Louisiana. He later moved to California with his family.
He chose the stage name Brenton Wood, inspired by the Brentwood neighborhood in Los Angeles.
Wood attended high school in Compton and then enrolled at East Los Angeles College, where he developed a passion for music influenced by artists like Jesse Belvin and Sam Cooke.
He began his musical career in the 1950s and gained fame in the 1960s after signing with Double Shot Records.
In 1967, Wood released three of his biggest hits “The Oogum Boogum Song,” which reached No. 34 on the Billboard Hot 100; “Gimme Little Sign,” which peaked at No. 9; and “Baby You Got It,” which also reached No. 34.
Notably, “The Oogum Boogum Song” has been featured in various films and TV shows, including Almost Famous and Don’t Worry Darling.
In 1972, Wood established his own label called Prophesy Records and later continued to release music under Mr. Wood Records.
