Tony Bennett dies at 96

Legendary singer Tony Bennett who was famous for his smooth voice and famous music passed away on Friday. He was 96.

Tony’s publicist Sylvia Weiner revealed that the singer died in his hometown of New York City just two weeks before his 97th birthday.

She also noted that there was no specific cause of death.

The 20 times Grammy winner had been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease in 2016.

His wife, Susan Benedetto told AARP Magazine in 2021 while sharing the news of his health for the first time in public,

“There’s a lot about him that I miss,”

“Because he’s not the old Tony anymore … but when he sings, he’s the old Tony.”

The legend had millions of admirers around the world including Lady Gaga who released two albums with the singing icon: 2014’s Cheek to Cheek and 2021’s Love for Sale.

The Poker Face singer, 37, told the crowd during one of their performances,

“He’s my friend. He’s my musical companion. And he’s the greatest singer in the whole world,” 

Gaga also accompanied Bennett during his last performance at Radio City Music Hall in August 2021. After that Bennett had to step back from performing as his health deteriorated.

How did Tony get into music?

In his decades-long career, Bennett releases more than 70 albums and sold more than 50 million records worldwide. He won 20 Grammys and 2 Emmys.

Tony was 95 years and 60 days when he released an album of new material, breaking the Guinness World Record for being the oldest person to do so.

Bennett was famous for many hits including, I Left My Heart in San Francisco, Fly Me to the Moon, and Steppin’ Out With My Baby and sang duets with Gaga to Love For Sale and Anything Goes.

Tony whose real name was Anthony Dominick Benedetto, was born on August 3, 1926, at St. John’s Hospital in Long Island City, Queens in New York City.

Bennett was the youngest child of grocer John Benedetto and seamstress Anna. He and his siblings were raised in poverty during the Great Depression as their father died when Tony was just 10 years old.

Tony grew up listening to artists like Bing Crosby, Judy Garland, and Louis Armstrong and developed an interest in music from early on.

At 10, Tony performed at the opening of the Triborough Bridge beside Mayor Fiorello La Guardia.

By the age of 13, he worked as a  waiter in several Italian restaurants in Queens and earned money by singing.

After World War II, he returned to music and studied at the American Theatre Wing on the GI Bill.
