RIP Len Goodman! Dancing With the Stars’ former Judge is no longer alive among us.

He took his last breath on Saturday, April 22, in a hospice in Kent, Southern England, following a battle with bone cancer. He was just 78.

His death was confirmed by his manager, Jackie Gill, with a heartbreaking statement on Monday, April 24.

“It is with great sadness to announce that Len Goodman has passed away peacefully, aged 78. A much loved husband, father and grandfather who will be sorely missed by family, friends and all who knew him.”

Len Goodman is survived by his wife Sue Goodman, son James William Goodman, and two grandchildren.

How was Len Goodman’s health condition?

Len was first diagnosed with Prostate cancer in March 2009. However, he secretly recuperated from the disease by undergoing surgery at a London hospital while filming past series of both Strictly and Dancing with the Stars.

In 2020, he underwent another surgery on his forehead to remove a mole after it turned out to be deadly melanoma. He said at the time,

“I went and they took it out and it’s gone. It was a tiny little thing on my forehead… probably because I play a lot of golf and I don’t wear a hat, which I do now”

Further, he has a partial knee replacement in the year 2015 and also had decompression surgery on his shoulder in 2016.

This time, Goodman sadly didn’t get recover from the disease.

What was Len Goodman best known for?

Goodman served as a head judge on the popular BBC dance competition “Strictly Come Dancing” from its 2004 launch right up until 2016.

The BBC’s director general Tim Davie also paid tribute to the beloved Goodman on his sudden death referring to him as a “wonderful, warm entertainer who was adored by millions”.

Davie added,

“He appealed to all ages and felt like a member of everyone’s family. Len was at the very heart of ‘Strictly’s’ success. He will be hugely missed by the public and his many friends and family.”

He also served as a judge on the U.S. adaptation, “Dancing With the Stars” aired on ABC, alongside fellow judges Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli from its launch in 2005 through to 2022.

In November 2022, Goodman officially announced his exit from the show after 17 years on its 31st season. He said during the Nov. 14 episode,

“While we are all getting and looking forward so much to the finale next week, it will also be with a touch of sadness. As this will be my last season judging on Dancing With the Stars.”

He added,

“I’ve been with the show since it started in 2005,” he continued. “It has been a huge pleasure to be a part of such a wonderful show. I’ve decided I’d like to spend more time with my grandchildren and family back in Britain.”

The television personality also praises his fellow judges, including dancer Derek Hough with the last statement,

“I cannot thank you enough, the Dancing With the Stars family. It’s been such a wonderful experience for me.”
