Lily Collins and her husband, Charlie McDowell, have welcomed their first child, a daughter named Tove Jane McDowell, via surrogacy.
The couple announced the exciting news on February 1, 2025, through an emotional Instagram post that included a photo of their newborn resting in a cot with a blanket embroidered with her name.
In the post, Collins expressed their gratitude, stating,
“Welcome to the center of our world Tove Jane McDowell. Words will never express our endless gratitude for our incredible surrogate and everyone who helped us along the way. We love you to the moon and back again.”
The announcement came as a surprise to many, as neither Collins nor McDowell publicly announced they were expecting a baby.
After announcing the birth of their daughter, some social media users criticized Collins and McDowell’s decision to use a surrogate.
In response to the negative comments, McDowell defended their choice, explaining that not everyone understands the reasons behind opting for surrogacy.
He shared another Instagram post, clarifying,
“In regards to the unkind messages about surrogacy and our path to having a baby—it’s OK to not be an expert on surrogacy, It’s OK to not know why someone might need a surrogate to have a child. It’s OK to not know the motivations of a surrogate regardless of what you assume. And it’s OK to spend less time spewing hateful words into the world, especially in regards to a beautiful baby girl who has brought a lot of love into people’s lives.”
He humorously concluded his remarks by stating,
“That’s all for now because she just popped and I need to change her diaper.”
Despite the criticism, the couple also received an outpouring of support from fans and fellow celebrities.

Lily Collins and Charlie McDowell started dating in 2019 after they met while filming Gilded Rage, a movie directed by McDowell in which Collins acted.
They made their relationship public on Instagram on August 20, 2019, sharing a heartfelt photo taken in Paris.
In September 2020, Charlie proposed to Lily with a custom cushion-cut engagement ring during a romantic road trip to New Mexico.
The couple married on September 4, 2021, at Dunton Hot Springs in Colorado in a private ceremony attended by about 40 close friends and family members including Collins’ father, Phil Collins, and McDowell’s mother, Mary Steenburgen.
Last year, the Emily in Paris star shared a post on Instagram to mark her third wedding anniversary, writing that “the best is still to come,” which may have hinted at the expected arrival of her baby girl.
Collins’s path to motherhood has been profoundly personal. In a 2017 interview with US Weekly, before she met her husband, she discussed her past battles with an eating disorder and how these experiences influenced her hopes for the future.
She stated,
“My reason to finally start talking about [my eating disorder] was the moment I realized I wanted a family, I wanted kids. I didn’t want this to be something I bring into that.”
Additionally, her husband, Charlie McDowell, mentioned in an interview with E! last October that they were considering starting a family, saying,
“We would like to move into that next stage, so we’ll see when it happens.”
