Father’s only daughter
Lois Laurel Hawes was the only daughter of the great comedy legend Stan Laurel. She had a brother named Stanley Laurel, who passed away after nine days after his pre-matured birth in 1930. Hawes is the daughter of Stan Laurel with his first wife, out of four, Lois Neilson, who was a silent-movie actress.
Stan Laurel along with his comedy partner Oliver Hardy was the popular comedian duo of their time, who appeared in more than 100 short films and feature films at the time between 1921 and 1952. However, Stan Laurel retired from his comedian life after the death of his partner Oliver Hardy in 1957.
According to the relatives, Hawes called Oliver Hardy “Uncle Babe”. Hawes used to visit her father’s set since her childhood days and has even made appearances in some of their productions.

She was Stan Laurel’s only living child with five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. Hawes was a great part of the organization called “Laurel and Hardy Forum“, a non-profit organization to bring the duo’s fans together.
The forum was so important to her that she would go straight to the forum after having the coffee to start her day. She later provided narration and interviews for several documentaries about the two.
We hope for the peace of Hawes’ departed soul.
The great comedy legend
Stan Laurel was a comedian whom some people believe to be greater than Charlie Chaplin. Both of his parents were active in theatre. Following the footsteps of his parents, Stan gave his first professional performance on stage at the Panopticon in Glasgow at the age of sixteen in 1906.
Stan then joined “Fred Karno’s troupe” of actors with the name ‘Stan Jefferson’ in 1910 and worked with the other legend Charlie Chaplin and acted as his understudy as well. Among his comedy partners was Olive Hardy.
The two of them started working together in the late 1920s while both of them were working with Hal Roach studio. After that, both of them signed a contract to work with 20th Century Fox.
However, their more than two and half decade-long partnership came to a halt when Hardy started to get strokes once in a while which made him quit acting.
Soon, there was news that Hardy had passed away in 1957, which left Stan devasted. Stan too was sick to attend his beloved friend’s funeral. After Hardy’s death, Stan never returned to the stage and took retirement from his career.
In the memory of the legends, Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, a movie called “Stan and Ollie” is being made, in which Laurel will be played by English comedian Steve Coogan, and Hardy by American actor John C. Reilly. This movie written by Jeff Pope and directed by Jon S. Baird will be released sometime in 2018.
