Manpreet Monica Singh makes history as the First Judge of Indian Origin in the US
Manpreet Monica Singh becomes the first Sikh female judge to be sworn in the US. She took the oath as a judge in Texas’ Harris County Civil Court at Law No. 4.
Singh announced her candidacy in November 2021 by tweeting,
“Today I am excited and proud to announce my candidacy for Judge of the Harris County Civil County Court at Law No. 4. As a native Houstonian, it is my hope to represent my community that prizes diversity and servant leadership.”
After her election, Monica expressed her gratitude at the oath-taking ceremony on Friday where she said,
“It means a lot to me because I represent H-town (a nickname of Houston) the most, so for it to be us, I’m happy for it,”
Indian-American Judge Ravi Sandill, who made history as the first South Asian Judge was also present at the ceremony.
Sandill, who is also a Sikh said:
“It’s a really big moment for the Sikh community,”
“When they see someone of colour, someone a little different, they know that possibility is available to them. Manpreet is not only an ambassador for Sikhs, but she’s an ambassador for all women of colour,”

Monica’s achievements in her 2-decade-long law career
More than a half million Sikhs are living in America with 20,000 in the Houston area.
Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner also expressed his happiness and said that it was a proud moment for the Sikh community.
She’s been working tirelessly as a trial lawyer for 20 years and has actively participated in many civil rights organizations at the local, state, and national levels.
Monica was born on July 6 in Houston, Texas in the United States. Her father was an Indian architect and migrated to the States in the early 70s.
Manpreet attended Klein Forest High School, the University of Texas at Austin, and then the South Texas College of Law.
Her dedication to her work earned her numerous awards and. accolades
She stood second as Houston Young Lawyers Association’s Most Outstanding Attorney in 2010. Furthermore, she is also the recipient of the 2017 Distinguished Member Award from the South Asian Bar Association.
Monica married Mandeep in 2003 and the couple lives in Bellaire with their two kids.
