Mariah’s relationship with her mother
Mariah’s relationship with her mom was very complex. She has detailed it out in her memoir The Meaning of Mariah Carey that released in 2020. In it, Mariah had said that she had a very complicated relationship with Patricia.
The mother-daughter relationship had led to a lot of confusion and pain for the little Mariah. It had become a competitive relationship with professional jealousy intervening in between. Mariah wrote:
“Professional jealousy comes with the territory of success, but when the person is your mother and the jealousy is revealed at such a tender age, it’s particularly painful.”
However, Mariah still harbored love feelings for her mother. It continues after her death. Hence she wrote in the first few pages of the book:
“To Pat, my mother, who, through it all, I do believe actually did the best she could. I will love you the best I can, always.”
In 2022, in am interview she gave to Gayle King, Mariah had revealed that her mother used to criticize her while she was growing up. And it affected her a lot.
She is thankful that it was her mother that gave her the exposure to music. Similarly, Mariah had a complicated relationship with her elder sister, Alison. She tried to be away from her and her brother Morgan physically and emotionally. That helped her lessen her pain.
