Maureen McGovern gives an update on her deteriorating health condition
Maureen McGovern informed her fans that she has been suffering from degenerative brain syndrome in a new Facebook video on Friday.
The singer revealed that she is diagnosed with Posterior cortical atrophy, with symptoms of Alzheimer’s or dementia.
In the video, the singer who won an Oscar for her song The Morning After in 1972 revealed:
”What I do, or what I am still able to accomplish has changed. ‘I am no longer able to travel or perform in live concerts. In fact, I can no longer drive — how’s that for a kick in the butt?’
While admitting that her new challenges are hard, she said that nothing will keep her from living life to the fullest.
She said:
‘At first I began having trouble finding in my mind the words I wanted to say. I struggled with the inevitable shock with fear and frankly hopelessness,’
The 73-year-old said that she then realized her inner life has not changed.
The two-time Grammy nominee noted:
”My passion for music, for singing, remains profoundly robust. ‘To me my music is a language that expresses what often cannot be said with just words. It elevates, explains, heals, brings joy and comforts.’
McGovern hopes her fans will support her on this difficult journey
The star also said that she accepted this difficult stage with open arms after decades of following her passion, performing, and bringing awareness to music therapy.
The Broadway artist added:
”We are all patients and caregivers at sometime in our lives. I have experienced how music and the arts free our spirits and open our hearts to our common humanity,’
The singer hopes that her fans will continue to join her in her next chapter.
She concluded the video by saying that her fans’ lives be filled with music and that they
‘be well, be safe, and know that you are loved.’
The Mayo Clinic describes PCA as a degenerative brain and nervous system that results in difficulty with eyesight and processing visual information.
The common symptoms of this syndrome can be hallucinations, anxiety, confusion, and changes in behavior and personality.
McGovern is popular for recording two Oscar-winning songs. She also received two Grammy nominations- best new artist of 1973, and also the best traditional pop performance of 1998 for The Pleasure of His Company.
