Rip! Barbie Hsu, the beloved Taiwanese actress popular for her role in the iconic drama Meteor Garden, is no longer alive among us.
The actress, also known as Big S, has tragically passed away at the age of 48. She died from pneumonia, a complication of influenza, while vacationing with her family in Japan during Lunar New Year.
However, the exact date of her death has not been publicly disclosed yet.
This news was confirmed by her sister, Dee Hsu, who expressed her sorrow and gratitude for their close relationship in a heartfelt statement.
“Our whole family came to Japan for a trip, and my dearest and most kindhearted sister Barbie Hsu died of influenza-induced pneumonia and unfortunately left us, I was grateful to be her sister in this life and that we got to care for and spend time with each other. I will always be grateful to her and miss her,”
According to reports from BBC, Barbie Hsu faced various health issues throughout her life, including epilepsy and heart disease, and had previously been hospitalized due to seizures.
The news about Hsu’s death has deeply shocked her fans and colleagues. Many outpoured condolences on social media platforms, where they expressed disbelief and sorrow over her untimely death.
On Monday, Ken Chu, a member of the boy band F4, posted a black screen along with a group photo of himself with Hsu on Instagram, and on Weibo, he shared his feelings by stating,
“What a bolt from the blue.”
Aya Liu, a long-time friend of the Hsu sisters, also took to Weibo to reflect on their last meeting at a gathering the previous month, where they had vowed to see each other more often.
She expressed her sorrow by writing,
“I didn’t think that would be our last gathering, Rest in peace, the most beautiful queen.”
She is survived by her husband, South Korean singer DJ Koo, and two children from her previous marriage.
Barbie Hsu: Early Career, Personal Life
Barbie Hsu started her career in the entertainment industry at the age of 17 when she formed a pop duo called S.O.S. with her younger sister, Dee Hsu.
The duo gained popularity in the mid-1990s with catchy songs and later transitioned into television hosting.
Barbie then got her career breakthrough after starring in the hit TV series Meteor Garden.
In the show, she portrayed Dong Shancai, a middle-class girl attending an elite school and became entangled into relationships with wealthy heirs.
Following this breakthrough, she starred in various other television shows and films, including Corner with Love and Summer’s Desire.
In 2022, Barbie retired from the entertainment industry after her divorce from businessman Wang Xiaofei, with whom she has two children.
She later remarried South Korean singer Koo Jun-yup in 2022, rekindling a romance that dated back years.
