Early Life

Morgan Freeman was born on June 1, 1937, in Memphis, Tennessee, to Mayme Edna and Morgan Porterfield Freeman. He is the youngest of five siblings. Morgan’s parents moved to Chicago to find work shortly after his birth, and he stayed with his maternal grandmother in Charleston, Mississippi. When he was six, his grandmother died, and he traveled to Chicago to be with his mother, who had recently divorced his father. They eventually returned to Tennessee.

When Freeman was nine years old, he got the acting bug and played the lead in a school play. In 1955, he graduated from Broad Street High School and enlisted in the United States Air Force. After serving in the military, he relocated to Los Angeles and began taking acting classes at the Pasadena Playhouse. From 1967 to 1979, Freeman was married to Jeanette Adair Bradshaw. In 1984, he married Myrna Colley-Lee, with whom he divorced in September 2010. He has four kids. His first marriage’s stepdaughter was tragically murdered in New York City in 2015. She was 33 years old at the time.

On the night of August 3, 2008, near Ruleville, Mississippi, Freeman was involved in a near-tragic vehicle accident. After going off the roadway, his Nissan Maxima overturned several times. Paramedics used the “Jaws of Life” to rescue Him and a female passenger, and flew them to a hospital in Memphis by helicopter. In the incident, Freeman shattered his left shoulder, arm, and elbow.
