Career Beginnings
Jimmy Donaldson was born on May 7, 1998, in Greenville, North Carolina, and graduated from Greenville Christian Academy in 2016.
When he was 12 years old, he began uploading movies to YouTube under the username “MrBeast6000.” He briefly attended college before dropping out to pursue a full-time YouTube career.
He primarily posted video game commentary, reaction videos, and funny compilations in his early videos.
Success
Jimmy rose to prominence following the release of the video “Counting to 100,000” in 2017. He spent 44 hours counting to 100,000 in the video. The video went on to be viewed over 21 million times.
He then posted a video in which he counted to 200,000. Other notable achievements include reading the dictionary, scripting the “Bee Movie,” ubering across America, saying “Logan Paul” 100,000 times, and watching the awful Jake Paul music video “It’s Every Day Bro” on repeat for 10 hours.
His YouTube accounts now have over 90 million subscribers and have produced over 10 billion video views. Most average videos have been seen over 20 million times. He has 12 million Instagram followers, 9 million Twitter followers, and 13 million TikTok followers.
He works with PewDiePie and has purchased billboard and radio commercials to assist him gain more subscribers than T-Series. At the 2019 Shorty Awards, he was nominated for Vlogger of the Year. Beast received the Breakout Creator award. He was nominated for a Kids’ Choice Award in the category of Favorite Male Social Star in 2020. He was named YouTuber of the Year in 2020. Beast was also named Creator of the Year at the 2020 Streamy Awards.
MrBeast attracted 400,000 new members and had over 80 million video views in just one week in July 2020. During that time, he was the 20th most popular figure on YouTube.
Stunt Philanthropy
Jimmy found pay dirt in 2018 when he started practicing “stunt charity.” MrBeast presented $1,000 to strangers in one of his most popular videos from this time period. Millions of followers quickly joined to his channels, resulting in his giving away hundreds of thousands of dollars, and even a million dollars.
In December 2019, he posted a video in which he dared viewers to keep their hands on a $1 million cash stack.
Monthly Video Production Budget
MrBeast has stated that he spends exactly what he earns each month on content creation. This makes sense when you consider that in some of his films, he physically gives away a million dollars. He spent at least $3 million in August 2020 on production costs, personnel pay, rent, and other expenses.
Monthly Earnings
As previously stated, MrBeast gets at least $3 million every month from YouTube video views. MrBeast, for example, uploaded 54 films on his 13 channels in March 2022. These 54 videos had a total of 283 million views. To understand how much money that translates into, we must first recognize MrBeast’s three key sources of income:
- Ad revenue
- Sponsorships
- Merchandise
Approaching each source:
Ad revenue
CPMs for video advertising vary greatly between nations. A video ad in the United States and Canada is substantially more expensive than an ad view in Brazil. However, an average video CPM of $5 seems reasonable. That works out to $5 per thousand views for MrBeast. This equates to $1.4 million in net earnings based on 283 million views.
Sponsorships
MrBeast charges $1 million every month to be the lead sponsor of his main video page, as previously reported. In March, for example, the sponsor was the credit agency Experian. I believe it is safe to conclude that Beast is bringing in another $1 million or more through sponsorships on his other platforms, for a total of $2 million.
Merchandise
Also known as the mysterious holy grail. According to several accounts, almost HALF of MrBeast’s $54 million in revenue last year came from apparel sales. This amounted to $2.25 million per month. To be prudent, let’s round up to $2 million.
Tallying these three revenue sources and we get:
1.4 + 2 + 2 = $5.4 million
That equated to $174,193 earned every single day in March.
Team Trees
Jimmy and retired NASA engineer Mark Rober launched the #TeamTrees fundraising challenge in October 2019. Within three months, they hoped to earn $20 million for the Arbor Day Foundation. Within two months, they had surpassed the $20 million goal, and as of this writing, the project had raised $23 million and planted over 7 million trees. When they reach their goal of planting 20 million trees, they will have removed an estimated 1.6 million tons of carbon from the atmosphere, as well as 116 thousand tons of chemical air pollution.
Mobile Gaming
MrBeast will release “Finger on the App,” a multiplayer endurance game, in June 2020. The game’s concept was actually fairly basic. Users from all over the world had to keep their finger on their phone screen while using the app. The last person to remove it wins $25,000.
Awards
MrBeast has been nominated for a lot of prestigious accolades over his career. At the 2019 Streamy Awards, he was named Breakout Creator. He was nominated for Ensemble Cast and Creator of the Year the same year.
In 2020, MrBeast won the following Streamy Awards:
- Creator of the Year
- Live Special
- Social Good: Creator
- Social Good: Nonprofit of NGO
That same year he won the YouTuber of the year award at the Shorty Awards.
At the Kids’ Choice Awards in 2021, he was nominated for Favorite Male Social Star. MrBeast earned the Favorite Male Creator award at the 2022 Kids’ Choice Awards.
Beast Burger
Jimmy will unveil the “Beast Burger” in December 2020 in collaboration with over 300 eateries across the United States. The MrBeast Burger app swiftly soared to the top of the Apple Software Store’s free app charts the day after it was released. He has sold over a million burgers to date.
Clothing Line
MrBeast’s merchandise line is his second-largest source of income, after YouTube. He sells t-shirts, hoodies, hats, water bottles, mouse pads, backpacks, and other items on shopmrbeast.com. It is estimated that merchandise sales account for roughly 40% of MrBeast’s annual income.
Charity
MrBeast has donated or raised tens of millions of dollars for many causes over the years. His stunt videos have raised funds for homeless shelters, the Veterans Army Wounded Warrior Program, Saint Jude Children’s Research Hospital, and a Los Angeles animal sanctuary. A December 2018 video, for example, donated $100,000 in clothing and other items to homeless shelters.
Jimmy joined forces with NASA engineer and YouTuber Mark Rober to launch the #TeamTrees foundation in October 2019. The goal was to generate $20 million for the Arbor Day Foundation over the next three months.
For every dollar raised, the charity would plant one tree. Hundreds of YouTubers came together to support the cause. #TeamTrees had raised $4 within 24 hours of its inception. By December they had raised over $20 million. As of this writing, they have raised north of $22 million.
Personal Life
Jimmy has Crohn’s disease, which is an inflammatory bowel disease. In ninth grade, he was diagnosed with the condition. He has spoken about his long battle with the crippling ailment throughout the years.
Prior to being diagnosed, he was sick nearly every day and had dropped 30 pounds over the summer due to the acute agony. MrBeast follows a fairly strict diet in addition to medication.
Girlfriend
MrBeast’s girlfriend, Maddy, was introduced for the first time in a February 2020 video titled “Surprising My Girlfriend With 100,000 Roses For Valentines Day.”
As of this writing, that video has received over 50 million views. Maddy has also appeared in a number of other MrBeast movies, including “I Adopted EVERY Dog in a Dog Shelter” and “I Spent 50 Hours in Solitary Confinement.”
