Natural Medicine and celebrities! Know the pitfalls of sole reliance on these natural remedies for cancer and other deadly diseases!
Natural remedies and therapies are being advocated left, right, and center for every ailment. But blindly resorting to them would be foolish since not all would lead to benefits and the beneficial value of these has also not been adequately researched and confirmed.
Three celebrities decided to go for Natural Medicine and ended up in a mess. Had they resorted to the conventional modes of therapy for the ailments that they suffered from, the outcomes might have been different and more optimistic.
Steve Jobs:
Apple co-founder Steve Jobs was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2003. Though most cancers involving the pancreas are life-threatening, Steve Jobs was not so unfortunate and had a rare, treatable form of pancreatic cancer. The conventional treatment in the form of surgery with or without other modes of treatment options could have given him a 25% chance of survival.
But what did Steve Jobs do? He opted for alternative therapies and pursued those for 9 months. He thought that he would avoid surgery if he went for holistic therapy. But the cancer spread and Steve Jobs had to undergo surgery in 2004 as a last-ditch to save his life. He lost this battle to cancer on 5 October 2011.

Farrah Fawcett:
American actress and model Farrah Fawcett was found to be affected with anal cancer in 2006. This natural athlete and a Texas native commenced her chemotherapy course but also used to travel to Germany for her natural and immune treatments. These were not approved for use in the USA and hence these long-distance trips.
But despite the conventional and natural therapies she opted for, she lost the struggle with her disease in June 2009.
Steve McQueen
This ‘King of Cool’ actor Steve McQueen was suffering from mesothelioma, a fatal cancer of the lining of the lung. This was in 1979. He opted for natural therapy and traveled to Mexico in July 1980.
He was given pancreatic enzymes-a very controversial therapy which was developed by a dentist. This dentist was black-listed in the USA and hence Steve had to go to Mexico to get treated by him. Daily, he was administered 50 vitamins and minerals, psychotherapy, Coffee enemas, and sheep and cattle fetuses’ injections.
There were also prayer sessions and healing massages. He claimed that he was recovering after he received laetrile, an apricot-pit-based injection.
But his cancer continued unabated and he had to undergo surgery to remove the cancerous tissue from his neck and abdomen. He succumbed to his cancer on 7 November 1980 just a year after his diagnosis.
Actress cum singer Olivia Newton-John had breast cancer and was started on anti-cancer drugs. But along with the conventional treatment, Olivia also started complementary remedies which included herbal supplements, acupuncture, meditation, and visualization.
She had started that when diagnosed in 1992, she had at that time considered not doing the conventional treatment and only going for the alternative path. But luckily she stuck to the conventional therapy and only on the side took the complementary therapy. All this helped her to come out victorious from her breast cancer.
The media queen, Oprah Winfrey has received flak for promoting alternative therapy and unapproved treatments on her shows. She retorted stating that she is only presenting and giving information to her viewers and she believes that they can decide and also know that she is not endorsing those medicines. But considering her fame, many people tend to fall prey to the unproven medicines which come on her show.
Not all alternative medicines are good and not all ailments can be treated by them. It could be used for wellness or prevention but drastic diseases, and conventional medicines still hold!
