New research: Dating apps are ineffective and unsafe with social ill-effects!
Dating apps came and increased in popularity. But now, people are getting exhausted on it. A new research has revealed that dating apps do not help a person find a better partner. It also has other negative aspects to it.
The age of dating apps
Dating apps were created in order to assist people in finding love and the right partner. Many such apps hit the market. Their subscriptions rose and they gained a lot of popularity giving money to the founders of such apps.
People of all ages began to use these apps in their love finding. But it was mostly, the Gen Z and millennials who used it. This type of online dating increased the dating pool and gave the users a chance to know more people than they would know by personal meeting.
The users of the apps thought that, due to profile matching, they might be able to get better life partners. But, unfortunately, this has not been the case. A new research has shown that online dating does not guarantee getting partners. It also does not guarantee getting better partners.
The new research on dating apps
Dating apps were aimed to help people procure better life partners. They were believed to have theoretical benefits. However, studies have shown this to be not true. Practice is contradictory to theory.
In fact, online dating and matchmaking does not lead to better sexual partners. It also has a lot of negative impacts on social life.
Researchers analysed data from 1960s to 2021. They state:
“Given the proliferation of online dating, we would expect to observe a substantial improvement in the ability to find and meet potential partners, reflecting reduced search costs brought about by this improved search technology. Instead, the findings show that the data contradict these predictions.”

Further, they add:
“My co-authors and I observed no decrease in search costs and no discernible increase in selectivity since 1960. Instead, we argue that effective search costs reflect individuals’ capabilities to process and evaluate information, which subsequently determines their proficiency in mate selection within the marriage market. Despite technological progress and its promise of easier matching, individuals’ capabilities to process information appear to remain unaltered, accounting for the apparent lack of enhancements in matching efficiency and selectivity.”
Problems of dating apps
Besides no guarantee of a better partner, dating apps decrease social mobility. This could affect physical health of a person. Moreover, it could lead to mental issues. Frauds and cheating are common on these platforms.
Bloomberg also states that these apps can increase income inequality. A high earner seeks another high earner as a partner. It says:
“Who people marry has a major impact on household income. The research shows that the two main contributors to inequality through the selection of a future spouse are education and skills […]
Overall, the predominance of online apps to find a future partner has led to a 3-percentage-point increase in the Gini coefficient — a widely used measure of income inequality, the research shows.”
People are also exhausted and tired of these apps. Hence, they are switching back to the older method of in-person meeting to find their right match.”
