Happiness is in the air and preparations are in full swing for the upcoming wedding of Norwegian Princess, Märtha Louise, 52 with her US fiance, Durek Verrett, 49. The wedding ceremony will take place on Saturday 31 August 2024.
Guests have already started arriving at a hotel in western Norway in the town of Alesund. These include various social media influencers, TV personalities, members of the Swedish royal family and also model and American reality TV star, Cynthia Bailey.
On Friday, all guests would be ferried by sea route to be at the scenic town of Geiranger that lies on the shores of a fjord, a Unesco World Heritage Site. The invitees will have a light lunch on the boat surrounded by waterfalls and mountains.
Exclusive rights of the wedding
Both Märtha and Durek are spiritual people. But their wedding function will adhere to the traditional rituals. Parish Priest Margit Lovise Holte will officiate the wedding as per the wedding liturgy of the Norwegian Church.
The soon to be wed couple has requested guests to not make use of their mobile phones or cameras during the festivities. They should also not post anything on social media.
However, they have given the exclusive rights to cover the wedding to American Hello magazine. They have already signed a deal with the foreign news outlet. This has upset the local media who are not been permitted to cover the royal event. Norway’s NRK TV Kristi Marie Skrede said:
“This means the public won’t know or see anything about it unless they buy the magazine,”
The latest news is that the Princess and her partner are in a working relationship with Netflix for more than a year. Netflix is making a moving and an indepth documentary on the life and relationship of the couple. This too has not gone down well with local media houses. The Norwegian public have not yet accepted Durek due to his strange and spiritual beliefs.
The relationship of the couple
The Princess is a former equestrian and the eldest daughter of King Harald of Norway. And Durek is a shaman. On his website, he claims that he is the sixth generation shaman. He calls himself “a servant of god and energy activator”. He states that his teachings are no-nonsense and he has the capability to demystify spirituality.
Durek had given an interview to Vanity fair in which he said that in his childhood, a relative had told him that one day he would marry the Norwegian Princess. In 2019, Märtha announced that she was dating Durek. Countering any criticism, she wrote on her Instagram:
“To those of you who feel the need to criticise: Hold your horses. It is not up to you to choose for me or to judge me. Shaman Durek is merely a man I love spending my time with and who fulfils me.”
They engaged in 2022. Durek revealed that he would move to Norway and the couple would stay at a house they purchased there.
Märtha had earlier, in 2002, married Ari Behn, an artist and author. They have three daughters together: Maud (born 28 April 2003), Leah (born 8 April 2005), and Emma (born 29 September 2008). However, the two divorced in 2017. Ari had depression and died in 2019 on Christmas day.
