Patrick Dempsey talks about being People’s 2023 Sexiest Man Alive
Patrick Dempsey impressed everyone with his small screen presence as neurosurgeon Derek McDreamy Shepherd on ABC’s Grey’s Anatomy nearly two decades ago.
His charm and heartthrob status gained him a fan frenzy. Now, after years in the entertainment industry, he takes the crown of the Sexiest Man Alive.
The 57-year-old Can’t Buy Me Love star said,
“I’m glad it’s happening at this point in my life,”
“It’s nice to have the recognition, and certainly my ego takes a little bump, but it gives me the platform to use it for something positive.”
Besides his love for acting, philanthropic causes are extremely close to his heart. He set up the Dempsey Center, in honor of his late mom. The center supports cancer patients and their families.
What many don’t know is Dempsey is a family man to his wife Jillian, 57, a makeup artist and founder of her own beauty line, and their three children Talula, 21, and twins Sullivan and Darby. He also loves honing his penchant for race-car driving.
Patrick revealed how he felt when he heard about the news of his winning the title.
He said, laughing,
“I was completely shocked, and then I started laughing, like, this is a joke, right? I’ve always been the bridesmaid!”
“I’d completely forgotten about it and never even contemplated being in this position. So my ego is good.”

He also revealed how his kids will react, saying, they’re “just going to make fun of me and pick on me and figure out every reason why I shouldn’t be.”
He added,
“Which is good, they keep me young.”
Next month, he will show off his racing skills in the Michael Mann-directed biopic Ferrari. He will be playing Italian driver Piero Taruffi. He admitted that the movie taught him a lesson in risk-taking.
Dempsey recalls,
“I’d been following the movie for years, so I called Michael and said, ‘I want to discuss being a part of this,”
“That taught me if you really want something, you have to do it yourself.”
Now Dempsey is finally learning that good things come to those who wait. He said,
“I’ve got the bumper stickers, T-shirts, posters,”
“I peaked many years ago,”
“But I’m still here.”
