In March 1971, she debuted on Broadway as Araminta in the original production of The Philanthropist. Later in August 1971, she made her West End debut opposite Sir Ralph Richardson in John Osborne’s West of Suez at the Cambridge Theatre.

Prior to this, she had already performed in both plays at the Royal Court Theatre. She portrayed the character of Ruth in the original 1974 London stage production of Alan Ayckbourn’s Norman Conquests trilogy.

Moreover, her television acting career began in 1972 when she played Vivie Warren in BBC2’s adaptation of Mrs. Warren’s Profession. She acted alongside Coral Browne in the title role and Robert Powell.

Likewise, in 1974, the production was repeated as a part of the Play of the Month series on BBC1. Later in 1994, Wilton landed the role of Browne in a radio adaptation of An Englishman Abroad for the BBC World Service, which was repeated on various BBC radio formats since then.

She has acted in several notable films throughout her career, including The French Lieutenant’s Woman, Cry Freedom, Iris, Calendar Girls, and Shaun of the Dead.  She also appeared in Jane Austen’s Pride & Prejudice, Woody Allen’s Match Point, and The History Boys.

In December 2012 and February 2013, she narrated Lin Coghlan’s dramatization of Elizabeth Jane Howard’s The Cazalets on BBC Radio.
