The identity of his parents is unknown to the media. But it is known that his Czech parents relocated to Australia after Worldwar II. He did not attend college as he is a self-taught photographer.

During his 8th birthday, his parents gifted him a Kodak Brownie box camera. He took his first photo then. It was the picture of a spider web in the garden.

Like used to take the camera on family vacations and take photos of country scenes and the ocean in his youth. He continuously, keeps taking pictures even during the road trip out of the city, the wilds of Australia along with his friend Michael Plumridge who is also a photographer.

Peter Lik did his first trip to the United States in 1984. He traveled around the state for almost a year in an old van. He got to know about Panoramic cameras and format photography ideas while he was in Alaska.

Later, after coming back to Australia, he carried on with the panoramic format. Lik moved back to the United States, with a project to photograph the scenery and topography in all its 50 states in 1989.

The photographer sold his pictures as postcards and used them in the calendars. In 2003, some photos clicked during his projects were used in his coffee table book, Spirits of America.

In the early 1990s, he served the tourism department of Queensland, Australia. He had to travel over the outback and photograph the less-seen areas. Later, the photographer emigrated to Las Vegas, Nevada, and started Lik USA which photo printing and framing business.

Later in the mid-1990s, Peter Lik opened his own publishing house where the production of coffee table books, postcards, and calendars was done. He published his debut book, Australia: Images of a Timeless Land in 1997. In the same year, he launched his gallery, in Cairn, Australia.

Similarly, he launched his first gallery in Lahaina, Hawaii, (2003) and in Las Vegas (2005). Continuously, he opened in the SoHo neighborhood in Manhattan gallery. All total, Lik has four galleries in Las Vegas and nine others over the US.

With the ongoing business, one of the photographs of Lik was sold for about 1 million USD which was the most expensive selling of his photograph during that time. The photographer’s one of the photographs named “One”, was sold at the eleventh-highest price ever paid for a photo.

His other photograph “Ghost” was able to win the Art om Nature category of the 2010 Windland Smith Rice International Awards.

It was also chosen during the nature photography exhibition at the Smithsonian Institution National  Museum of Natural History in Washington, D.C.  Creating a ghostly aura, the photo was taken in a slot canyon.

“Inner Peace” one of his photographs was awarded the Windland Smith Rice International Award.

Lik appeared as a host on the From The Edge With Peter Lik in 2011, which was the first original program on the weather channel. The documentary series includes the journey of Peter Lik.
