Prince Harry and Meghan Markle have welcomed a new member to the family!
The beautiful couple adopted a 7-year-old Beagle named Mamma Mia, who was rescued from a breeding facility that breeds dogs for biomedical research.
On Thursday, Beagle Freedom Project, a Los Angeles-based rescue organization told BuzzFeed News,
“[Harry and Meghan] really impressed me. Their energy was so loving and sweet,”
The president and founder of the organization, Shannon Keith, confirmed the Sussexes’ new canine companion as a 7-year-old beagle named Mamma Mia, who was rescued alongside her eight puppies.
Keith explained that earlier this month, she received an email asking if she had time for a call with a “VIP donor”. She then agreed without knowing the person to whom she’d be talking.

When the Duchess contacted her personally Keith even doesn’t know exactly who was on the phone. Keith told BuzzFeed News although she immediately connected with Meghan during that first conversation.
She explained,
“I was enthralled by her. The entire time I was thinking, Whoever this person is, she’s amazing, she’s our people.”
Similarly, the Duke and Duchess visited the organization’s headquarters this month and chose Mamma Mia specifically.
The director of the Beagle Freedom Project said,
“The duchess is holding Mia and was like, ‘We’re adopting her. She was like ‘No, we don’t want a Christmas puppy. … We want ones we can help who are older.”
The new pet is not their first rescue beagle
When Meghan moved from Toronto to London to live with Harry she brought her dog Guy, a rescue beagle from Kentucky, with her together.
The new pup is one of 4,000 beagles rescued pets from an Envigo RMS LLC facility in Cumberland, Virginia. The company breeds and sells animals for use in biochemical and pharmaceutical sciences research.
In May the US government filed suit against the company alleging egregious violations of the Animal Welfare Act. The following month, the Justice Department secured a court order forcing the company to permanently shut down.
