Prince Harry and his lawsuits against British National Press!
Prince Harry has a long-going legal battle with British Press. He has raised arms to fight against his privacy invasion by the media outlets of the UK. What is this case all about? Who all are the litigants? Which newspapers are the named culprits?
Prince Harry and his litigation against Fleet Street
Prince Harry has began a legal battle against the British National Press or Fleet Street (famous for its press and printing agencies). It has been going on since a long time.
And in February 2024, after four years of court fight, Harry had won a case in which he had sued the publishers of the news outlet, The Mirror in the UK. In its verdict, the Court said that there was adequate evidence to say that the media outlet had hacked into Harry’s mobile phone regularly and to a vast extent.
Harry got a compensation of £300,000 and reimbursement of the attorney and other legal fees that he paid. His lawyer, David Sherborne, referred to the previous editor of Daily Mail, Piers Morgan (from year 1995 to 2004) as “an editor who knew perfectly well what was going on”. He added that the mission will continue.
In December 2023, Harry had won a case against MSN. He received damages of £140,600 for this case from MSN.
Harry has also put in a lawsuit against News Group Newspapers who are the publishers of The Sun UK and also used to publish News of the World that is no more operational. The trial will start next year in January.
Lawsuit against Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL)
There is another case that the former Duke of Sussex has made against Associated Newspapers Limited (ANL). It is about misusing information that was private and about Harry and his family, bugging cars, and hacking of voicemails.
Harry is one of the seven elite individuals who are suing ANL. The other six litigants are English actress, Liz Hurley, 59, British singer, Elton John, 77, Baroness Doreen Lawrence, mother of Stephen Lawrence who died on 22 April 1993 at age 18 due to a racially-motivated attack, English Sadie Frost, 59, Canadian filmmaker, David Furnish, 62, and Sir Simon Hughes, 73, former British politician.
ANL has denied all charges. The trial will begin in January 2026 and will last for nine weeks.
The presiding judge’s worry
There was a preliminary hearing for two days on the ANL case. It came to light that the trial will cost both sides a total of £38min.
This high figure shocked the judge Justice Nicklin. He expressed his concern about this high cost. Furthermore, he advised both side lawyers to reconsider the need for the case. He suggested them to settle the case out of court. He said:
“You are entitled to spend as much as you like… but the question is how much you can recover.”
But the lawyer of the accusing side, David Sherborne stressed that for his clients, non-monetary gain is what matters more. Hence, they requested the judge to go one with the full trial in the case, immaterial of the cost incurred.
