Rachael Kirkconnell has recently opened up about her breakup with Matt James, nearly two weeks after he announced their split via Instagram.
During an appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast, she expressed her shock and disbelief over the sudden end of their four-year relationship.
Kirkconnell recounted that she found out about the breakup while on a flight, explaining,
“Literally the plane is taking off and I see his post, and that’s it. I don’t have any service or anything for the next 12 hours, so I’m freaking out because, you know, just got broken up with, and now, a few hours later, it’s for the whole world to see and I’m still trying to process it.”
Kirkconnell described her emotional state as being in “total shock,” noting that she had not yet made a public statement because she was still processing the situation.
She shared,
“I’m still in total shock, I think that’s why I didn’t say anything. Still haven’t made a statement or anything because I’m processing this just like everyone else is.”
Kirkconnell believed that she and James were on the same page regarding their future, as they had discussed engagement rings a few months prior. She recalled,
“We talked about rings… he told me to start saving some things, picking things out,”
Rachael felt blindsided by her breakup with James, especially since they had recently seemed happy together and shared moments on social media before the split.
Similarly, the reality TV star liked supportive comments from fans that suggested she might not have been prepared for the announcement to be made public. The fan wrote,
“The more I’m thinking about it the more I think he completely blindsided her with this, Give her some grace and let her respond in her own time.”
What led to Rachael Kirkconnell and Matt James’ breakup?
Rachael Kirkconnell appeared on a podcast shortly after TMZ released footage of her first public outing since her breakup with Matt James.
At LAX before boarding her flight, she said she was “hanging in there” and later shared more details about the breakup.
“Things will start to come out and I’ll speak about it whenever I’m ready, but for now, I’m just protecting my peace,”
However, she confirmed that there was no infidelity involved in their split and firmly stated that there would be no reconciliation, saying,
“No. Yeah, we’re out.”
During the podcast, Kirkconnell shared that Matt was worried about their compatibility and certain traits in her as a future wife. Kirkconnell stated,
“There were just qualities about me that he worries about having in a wife. Like at the end of the day, there are things that we aren’t compatible with. And the whole accountability and saying sorry and all that was really the main thing.
Rachael Kirkconnell and Matt James: Relationship Timeline
Matt James and Rachael Kirkconnell were in a relationship for four years before their recent unexpected breakup.
They first met on Season 25 of The Bachelor in 2020, where Kirkconnell won the season despite controversy about her past.
Although they left the show as a couple, they opted not to get engaged during the finale.
Their relationship faced challenges when photos surfaced of Kirkconnell attending an antebellum-themed party in college, leading to a brief split between them.
Despite this, they reconciled in May 2021 and shared their journey of healing and growth over the following year.
In a May 2022 interview with PEOPLE, James shared,
“I’ve learned a lot. And at the end of day, everything that we’ve been through has prepared us for the future, It felt like the world was against us. Some people felt like the situation was blown out of proportion and others felt like it hadn’t gotten enough attention. We were just trying to enjoy each other and grow our relationship without having to deal with people we didn’t even know weighing in”
After that, the couple traveled together and frequently featured each other on social media.
Similarly, James mentioned in a February 2024 interview with PEOPLE that he and his now former partner are considering marriage, as they were excited about their future together.
“We wouldn’t be together if that wasn’t the same goal, I’m definitely excited for what the future looks like with us.”
James said if he proposed, it would be “special because Rachael is very special.”
“It’s about doing whatever you’re doing at your own pace, whether that’s the relationship, your job, exercise, If you do things that other people want you to do and you don’t consider y’all’s feelings, then I think that is a recipe for disaster.”
Unfortunately, their relationship didn’t lead to marriage. James announced their split in an emotional Instagram post on January 16, 2025.
The post included a photo of their first meeting on The Bachelor and captioned it,
“Father God, give Rachael and I strength to mend our broken hearts. Give us a peace about this decision to end our relationship that transcends worldly understanding. Shower our friends and family with kindness and love to comfort us. And remind us that our Joy comes from you, Lord.”
Similarly, James tagged Kirkconnell in the post but turned off the comment section.
