Charles Shyer, the renowned director known for his work on beloved films such as Father of the Bride and Private Benjamin, has passed away at the age of 83.
His family confirmed that he died on December 27, 2024, at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles following a brief illness.
However, they did not disclose the specific cause of death. In a heartfelt statement, they expressed their deep sorrow, stating,
“It’s with an indescribably heavy heart that we share the news of our beloved father, Charles Shyer’s passing. His loss leaves an unfillable hole in our lives, but his legacy lives on through his children and the five decades of wonderful work he’s left behind.”

Shyer is survived by four children, including Hallie Meyers-Shyer, who recently directed the comedy Goodwich.
Hallie honored her father on Instagram by sharing a nostalgic photo and writing, “1941-2024 A complete original.”
His other children are Annie Meyers-Shyer and twins Jacob and Sophia. Additionally, his ex-wife Nancy Meyers paid tribute to him on Instagram with two photos from their time working together.
She then captioned the post,

Shyer was married three times throughout his life. He was first married to Diana Ewing (from 1969 to 1974), then married to Nancy Meyers (from 1980 to 1999), and to Deborah Lynn (from 2004 to 2009).
A legacy of Charles Shyer
Charles Richard Shyer was born on October 11, 1941, in Los Angeles, California. He is the son of Melville Shyer, a notable figure in the film industry and one of the founders of the Directors Guild of America.
Shyer attended UCLA for his studies and began his career in the entertainment industry by working as an assistant to Garry Marshall and Jerry Belson on the television series The Odd Couple.
Over a career that spanned more than five decades, he made significant contributions to Hollywood, particularly in the genres of comedy and family films.
He co-wrote the film Private Benjamin in 1980 with his then-wife Nancy Meyers, which earned them an Oscar nomination.
Together, they collaborated on several successful projects, including Baby Boom (1987) and the Father of the Bride films released in 1991 and 1995, both featuring Steve Martin and Diane Keaton.
Shyer’s later works include The Affair of the Necklace (2001) and Netflix holiday films such as The Noel Diary (2022) and Best Christmas Ever! (2023).
