Rita Wilson had developed serious side effects of the experimental drug chloroquine in Australian hospital!
- Rita Wilson and her husband Tom Hanks had both tested for coronavirus last month.
- They were admitted to an Australian hospital.
- Rita has now opened up about the extreme side effects of chloroquine she experienced.
Rita Wilson and her drug reaction
Tom Hanks and his wife Rita Wilson tested positive for Covid-19 and were in Australia at that time. They could not travel back and the medical team admitted them to the Australian hospital, Gold Coast University Hospital in Queensland.
For high fever, doctors started the drug chloroquine on Rita. It is an anti-malarial medicine and is used experimentally in the current coronavirus infection.
Coronavirus is a highly virulent new virus with a high associated fatality rate. Various drugs are being tried as a treatment for it such as chloroquine, hydroxychloroquine, and some anti-HIV drugs.
Rita has claimed that chloroquine caused severe side effects in her. She told American TV channel CBS:
“They gave me chloroquine,”
“I know people have been talking about this drug. But I can only tell you that – I don’t know if the drug worked or if it was just time for the fever to break.”
“My fever did break but the chloroquine had such extreme side effects, I was completely nauseous, I had vertigo and my muscles felt very weak … I think people have to be very considerate about that drug.”
What do the hospital authorities say?
When asked about Rita Wilson’s treatment, a spokeswoman for Gold Coast University hospital refused to comment on it. But she did accept that some selected patients with coronavirus infection were prescribed chloroquine.
The spokeswoman said:
“Gold Coast Health has used a variety of medication in patients with more severe Covid-19. Chloroquine, hydroxychloroquine and lopinavir-ritonavir have been used on selected patients.”
What do experts say about the use of experimental drugs in coronavirus?
Many countries have recommended using experimental drugs such as chloroquine, hydroxychloroquine, and anti-HIV drugs in coronavirus which has no proven cure as of now.
Even US President Donald Trump has claimed that hydroxychloroquine is a wonderful drug and has put a lot of confidence in it.
But experts are not certain of its role. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the top infectious diseases adviser in the USA states that there is not enough evidence to prove that it cures coronavirus.
Additionally, the drug dies have some really serious side effects such as on the heart. Australian researchers have warned of its risk of causing heart damage. Last month a man from Arizona, after taking chloroquine phosphate. He is probably self-motivated.
His widow said:
“Trump kept saying it was basically pretty much a cure,”
Australian Health Protection Principal Committee – the expert panel on health emergencies recommends using it only in the controlled settings of a hospital and only for gravely ill cases.
