- The wealthy Russian celebrity Roman Abramovich has purchased houses in Manhattan and is in the process of renovating them.
Roman Abramovich’s Manhattan home
It has been reported that Roman has purchased three historic townhouses on East 75th Street on the Upper East Side and is combining these to make them into a huge family home.
The three townhouses are in huge plots themselves and when he combines them it would become a 31,500-square-foot home.
Roman had started the process of buying the houses on 75th Street between Fifth Avenue and Madison Avenue in the year 2014.
He has paid a total of $ 90 million for all of this property. It has been learned that the cost of renovating these historic places itself could reach $ 100 million.
The deeds of the properties
Though Roman had purchased the properties in his name, he later transferred to deeds of the properties which are situated on 9, 11, and 13 East 75th Street to his ex-wife Dasha Zhukova who is a naturalized citizen of the USA.
The total value of these properties is $ 74 million. There is another townhouse at 15 East 75th Street and this too he transferred to the name of Dasha and its value is said to be $ 16.5 million.
This later townhouse was also to be included initially in the mega-mansion plan but later on Roman decided against it.
People are wondering the reason for this transfer of his properties to the name of his ex-wife.
It is learned that due to close relations and good ties with Russian President Vladimir Putin, Roman has been facing sanctions from the US Government.
Hence when the properties are in the name of his wife who is a US citizen, the US government cannot touch or seize it.
Moreover, his net worth is estimated to be $12.8 billion as per the sources in 2019.
Roman Abramovich and his plans for a house in the USA
Roman had always wanted to buy and build a house in the USA. He had wanted to own a house in New York. In the year 2014, he approached the owner of Berwind Mansion which is a 15000 square foot triplex on Fifth Avenue.
He asked him to sell the property to him but the owner would not part with it. Not being able to get hold of some good houses in New York, Roman then began to buy townhouses on East 75th Street in the year 2015.
Roman Abramovich and his mega-plan for this huge family house
Roman wants to build a 6-story home on the property that he has purchased. This home will have 12 bathrooms, an indoor/outdoor pool, and also a two-story atrium which would be used as an art gallery.
After it is built, Roman’s house will be bigger than the home of the New York Mayor which is called Gracie Mansion.
It will also be more in size than the mansion of the governor which is situated in Albany. Both of these properties of the Mayor and the Governor are 20000 sq. feet in size.
The new mansion of Roman will also have 2 elevators, a wine cellar, two kitchens, a butler’s pantry, and also a sauna. The top floor would be a roof garden and also have an outdoor dining area.
At the rear of the house, there will be a 4-story bulletproof glass panel which will have metalwork in bronze to hold it together.
Roman plans to have wide staircases which would be 17 feet in width. Most palatial homes have staircases that are usually not more than 8 feet wide.
The fourth floor is for the master bedroom, bathroom, and five walk-in closets. This will be over 4500 sq. feet area. This will also have a flex room and a study room. The fifth floor will have 4 more bedrooms and bathrooms and 2 studies and playrooms.

New York Mayor’s comment
The New York Mayor is not happy with Russians planting their roots in the city. He feels that people like Roman use their country’s government to steal wealth from the country and people and later use it to buy properties abroad.
He has said so since it is believed that Roman has close links with Putin and had helped him to become the Russian President. It is also said that Roman made a $10 billion fortune through rigged auctions.
