Sam Williams opens up about how it feels to be a gay man
Sam Williams is getting candid about being gay and hopes it helps other people with similar preferences feel less alone.
The country star recently appeared on Apple Music’s Proud Radio with Hunter Kelly to discuss his new Titled Crown music video. On the show, the 25-year-old also discussed why it became important for him to open up about his sexuality.
In an upcoming episode, the rising star explained the inspiration behind his new music video. It shows his upbringing as Hank William Jr.‘s son and his kiss of another man for the first time, who is his boyfriend.
Williams explained that he initially planned on including references to his sexuality in a video for his song Snow Angels that never happened.
While conceptualizing the Titled Crown, director duo Alexa and Stephen Kinigopoulos felt the singer needed to include a gay kiss to tell his real-life story to the world.
Williams said:
“At first I kind of thought that, ‘I’m tackling something else with this.’ And I thought that maybe that’s for another project,”
“But again, I felt like I was promoting invisibility, like I wasn’t being visible and wasn’t being myself. And I just thought it was the perfect opportunity to just show who I was.”

Williams explained revealing his sexuality to his late sister
The show host asked him to give details of his identity to which Sam said he uses he/him pronouns and said:
“I identify as gay, and I’ve never said that to anybody else. I mean, people at my label know and people in my personal life know, but this is the first time that I’ve ever been, besides a show or two, that I’ve ever been this public about it. And it is scary, but it feels good.”
The star who spent his life growing up in Paris and Tennessee explained how growing up in a small town caused him to spend a lot of his time and energy hiding his true feelings and sexuality to fit in with other kids.
Sam explained:
“It’s exhaustive, and I think that… if I was a kid, and I was younger, and I saw somebody like myself doing an interview like this and just saying that, ‘This is who I am and I’m proud to be who I am,’ that it would have been impactful for me,”
“So I think at the end of the day, that’s one of the most important reasons why I’m being so open.”
Apart from his sexual identity, the music video also sheds light on Sam’s relationship with his late sister, Katie. She died in a car accident in June 2020. Sam revealed he informed his sister about his sexuality before her passing.
