  • Sarah Ferguson and Prince Andrew remain close friends despite their divorce.
  • The exes tied the knot on July 23, 1986 wedding day in London.
  • The former couple also shares two daughters: Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie.

Sarah Ferguson still loves Prince Andrew

Sarah Ferguson has stated that, regarding getting married to Prince Andrew, she would do it all over again, “a hundred percent”.

While unveiling more from her life, Ferguson made this statement with her elder sister Jane Luedecke in an interview for The Sunday Times. She said about the ex-husband Duke of York – married in 1986 and divorced in 10 years- “I was totally and utterly in love with Andrew”.

He’s the best, a great man with a great heart, and kind,” she said of their July 23, 1986 nuptials.  “Our wedding was the best day of my life,” she continued. “But I gave up my anonymity that day. I was able to because love conquers all. It’s still with us today.”

The ex-couple had two daughters, Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie, and have remained friends after separating in 1996 until now living together at Royal Lodge up at the Windsor estate.

At this time, the Duchess of York, aged 65 years, has supported Prince Andrew, aged 64, during scandals regarding his disastrous BBC Newsnight interview in 2019. There he faced allegations of sexual assault, his enforced step back as a working royal, and, most recently, allegations related to an alleged Chinese spy.

“I won’t let him down,” Ferguson told The Sunday Times of her ex-husband. “He supports me as much as I support him. He’s supported me through thick and thin, not just marriage or divorce. We agree on the three Cs — communication, compromise, compassion.”

Referencing her sister Jane heading for Australia, Ferguson said, “I became the carer for Dad.” Their father was Major Ronald Ferguson, who died in 2003. “I was left to look after a sad man, which is sort of what I’m doing now.”

How was Sarah’s relationship with the Royal family?

She also had a strong relationship with the royal family before marrying Prince Andrew. “I have known the King all my life, and completely adore him,” Ferguson said. “He is kind, makes me laugh, and I love that he still calls me Fergie,” she said, alluding to her popular nickname.

I recall my mother telling me, “Don’t be naughty with the Prince of Wales when he stays, don’t duck him in the pool.” Ferguson added, “I’d totally duck him in the pool and put a fake dog turd outside his room. He thought it was hilarious.”

Ferguson revealed this to The Sunday Times: that King Charles’s second wife Queen Camilla “was very close to my Mum, which is why we are so close now.” But Charles’ first wife, Princess Diana, “befriended me when I was 14,” she explained.

“Thus, it becomes big that the Queen and I get along now. It’s quite beautiful, and she reminds me of Mum. I respect the amazing support she gives to this country. I want as much as possible to do for the Queen. And I hope they would call me for more.”

On Queen Elizabeth, Ferguson said: “We got on that well,” saying: “My Mum was her close friend, so she knew me all my life and she loved me,” according to the outlet. “The Queen was so much more my mother than my actual mother. I called her Mumma. She never let me down; even when I disappointed her, she stood by me. Even in the darkest days, she was with me.”

”Still, I always got a little nervous seeing her right up until the end, because she was the Queen of England. I had many COVID jabs so I could walk the dogs with her.”

Sarah takes care of the late Queen’s dogs

Ferguson inherited the last two of late Queen Elizabeth’s corgis, Muick and Sandy, following her death on September 8, 2022. They currently reside with her and Prince Andrew at the Royal Lodge. “They’re just amazing,” Ferguson said.

Of Prince Andrew, Ferguson told The Sunday Times that she first met him when she was 12. “My first thought was that I was going to marry him,” she said.

“We came back into each other’s lives when Diana invited me to Ascot in 1985, and six months later we were engaged. You weren’t allowed to hang out or live with each other then. Diana couldn’t; I couldn’t.”

”But they learned from us, and Sophie [the Duchess of Edinburgh, who married Prince Edward in 1999] and Catherine [the Princess of Wales, who married Prince William in 2011] could. They both got to know their boys.”

After marrying into the royal family, Ferguson said, “I was ‘the breath of fresh air.'” “Everybody loved me-it was addictive. I guess I got lost trying to be like Diana, the big mistake I made.”

More into Ferguson’s past food addiction and breast cancer

She was known to have an addiction to food, telling the outlet that “It was truly the one thing that kept my life moving, that I could eat my emotions.” After that, as soon as the media started calling her the “Duchess of Pork” a disgustingly cynical play on her title, the Duchess of York-“I believed my critics,” said Ferguson.

“But the Queen never lost me. The best advice she gave me was the last thing she said to me: ‘Sarah, remember that yourself is good enough.’ It makes me cry.”

Fergie recalls suffering from cancer

He said that in recent years, Ferguson has been treating breast cancer and skin cancer at the same time. Recalling: “She was very insistent on getting a mammogram. She saved my life.” I thought I was going to die; then I looked up “mastectomy” and faced it. Now I love Derek and Eric, as I call my breasts.”

About her second cancer diagnosis: “My father died of melanoma, and so when I got that diagnosis on New Year’s Eve 2023, I almost fainted,” she stated. “I’m done with treatment but I won’t expose myself to the sun anymore.”

”The rest I have to continue living. I am lucky, it freed me from the shackles of my heart. Before, I did not think it was okay to be myself. Don’t wait for a cancer diagnosis to free yourself.”
