14th February is Valentine’s day and it stands for romantic ties and a day of showering love and affection on your partner.
But this year, many brands are delinking romance from the day. And they are asking people to stock chocolates, flowers, scents, and gifts. This is not for someone else, but for self. They are advocating self-care and self-gift this Valentine’s day.

CivicScience did a survey and found that 50% of the participants had plans to celebrate this year’s valentine’s day by gifting themselves. While, 60% of the Gen Z population of the USA had this self-gift idea in mind for 14th February this year. The reason is the hard economic conditions of today.
Brands promoting self-care
The reason that brands are using these marketing tactics to boost sales is that they have witnessed a rise in consumers who are purchasing for self-treatment this valentine’s day.
Bath & Body Works posted on their Instagram while promoting their new collection:
“You don’t need a Valentine to fall in love,”
Clothing brand, Target wrote in its social media:
“Self-love is the best love,”

Personal care essential brand, Athena Club has a whole line-up at Walmart of products for self-care. They have launched strawberry whipped shaving cream and ask people to treat themselves to this routine of their dreams.
Beauty brand, LYS Beauty has a new collection of lip balms. Its campaign is ‘Capture the love’. Founder of the brand, Tisha Thompson revealed that the brand name LYS stands for love yourself. She added:
“It’s such a perfect time for people to focus on self-love, whether it be taking yourself out or making a self-purchase or just doing relaxing things,”
IKEA, the furniture brand has created valentine-themed products for renovation of personal space. These include heart-shaped wall lamp, red and pink throw pillows, etc. offered at a discount for loyalty members. Homeware is not a conventional valentine’s day gift, but it is great as a self-gift.

An assistant professor of marketing at the Austin Peay State University, Clarksville, TN, Dr. Terry Damron states that the definition of valentine’s day has evolved over the years. Hence, brands are keeping up pace with it:
“When we look at consumer buying behavior across the last decade, we can see the focus of Valentine’s Day has widened to include the celebration of a variety of relationships,”
“Savvy retailers have adapted to this shift, refining and expanding their product mix and promotions to reflect consumer demand.”
