From serious to casual dating: the shift in paradigm!
With the advent of digital technologies and changes in attitudes and behaviors of young people around the world, dating process has also undergone a dramatic change. Casual dating has become common. But with any change, there is also its plus and negative points.
Digital technology and dating
Digital technologies have swept the world. The most people exposed to them are the millennials and Gen Z. But the older generation has also not been able to keep away from it.
Newer dating apps made it easier to find match options with the click of a mouse. However, due to it, the user also got a variety of options and that made selection difficult. Uncertainties cropped in and accordingly, the youth of today decided to change their attitudes and behaviors.
They preferred testing waters before committing into any serious relationships. Hence, serious relationships were replaced by casual relationships. The young people want to be clear of their intentions with their partner right at the start of the relationship.
What relationship experts say about casual dating?
These changes in behaviors during dating in the young population has not gone unnoticed by relationship experts. Defining casual relationships, Yumnah Syed-Swift, who is a licensed therapist at Sufiyana Counseling Services explains:
“‘Some people consider casual dating to include dating multiple people without the intention of settling down into a relationship. Others consider it an agreed-upon boundary [against] ‘catching feelings.'”
In this relationship, things are less secretive and more transparent. Dating apps have helped people to connect and network without any commitments. These online apps have made it easier to differentiate right at the outset whether the two people coming together want a friendship or casual sexual relationship or a serious relationship.
Relationship experts also have discovered that in the relationships of today, there are more women who make the first move. They no more wait for men to ask them out for a date. The pressure on the dating couple is lesser.
The pitfalls
In the earlier days, dating meant going in for a serious relationship and commitment for life. But this no more holds true. Hence, if two people are together, it does not mean that they would marry sooner or later. It could just be a mere friendship or a casual relationship with no seriousness involved. Hence, an ambiguity has entered into what dating actually means nowadays.

Due to this, the advance planning for a date has also been minimized and reduced to a casual appearance for the date time and information by a mere short phone call or a text message. There is less personal touch to the whole thing because people feel that the coming together might not be for a lifetime.
The varied options can frighten some dating app users and make them more hesitant. They may get overwhelmed and cease to use the platform. The repetitive and impersonal nature of such a dating can make life boring.
However, one should look out for a common ground to talk about. Meaningful connections and connections with people that share common interests and hobbies would be worthwhile. Chemistry is also vital and should not be ignored.
