Who is Sharon White?

Sharon White is a senior British civil servant. Sharon has been a civil servant in the British Civil Service, among which was the Office of the Second Permanent Secretary from 2013 to 2015 in Her Majesties Service.

Thereafter, since March 2015 she was the Chief Executive of the British media regulator The Office of Communications.

Currently, she is the sixth Chairman of the John Lewis Partnership, succeeding Sir Charlie Mayfield.

Her parents migrated to the UK from Jamaica in the 1950s. She belongs to Jamaican-British heritage.

Sharon White was born in East London and brought up in Leyton where she attended a comprehensive school.

After high school, she attended Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge, from where she received a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics.

Sharon White worked for a church in Birmingham before joining the British civil service in 1989.

She worked first at Her Majesty’s Exchequer, 1 Horse Guards Road, Westminster, London, and later for the British Embassy in Washington.

Furthermore, she also worked at the Policy Unit at 10 Downing Street, Westminster, during the Blair government.

From 2003 to 2009 Sharon White worked for the World Bank, as the Director-General at the Department for International Development.

During the intervention between 2007-2008 Treasury, she supervised a review of the financial management of the government and the Treasury’s management response to the International financial crisis during these years.

Thereafter from 2012 to 2013, Sharon White became the Director-General for Public Spending at the Treasury.

In December 2014, it was announced that White would be the new Chief Executive from March 2015 in The Office of Communications.

Recently in June 2019, it was announced that White would be stepping down from her role at “The office of communications” as the sixth Chairman of the John Lewis Partnership.

In the near future- in early 2020, she is expected to take up her role at the retailer.

In the 2020 New Year Honours, Sharon was named Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire (DBE) for public service.
