Six new symptoms and some rare symptoms of covid-19 infection!
- Covid-19 infection affects the respiratory system predominantly.
- According to CDC had listed on its website three symptoms of coronavirus related to the breathing tract.
- But as the infection affects more people of different races in different countries, doctors now report new symptoms to be part of the covid-19 illness.
- Hence CDC has updated its website and added 6 more symptoms to it.
The three symptoms of coronavirus, covid-19
The c0vid-19 predominantly a respiratory tract virus but also has systemic manifestations.
As the infection spreads to more populations in various countries, doctors became aware of more symptoms associated with this life-threatening infection.
They passed on the information to CDC which has updated it on its website.
Earlier, it was stated that fever, cough, and shortness of breath (difficult breathing) are the symptoms of coronavirus infection.
These were the classical triad of coronavirus disease. But now doctors are seeing six more symptoms increasingly with the infection. What are these new symptoms?
New six symptoms of coronavirus
CDC has updated its website and added on it six more symptoms of coronavirus infection making the total 9. The six new additions of covid-19 symptoms are:
Chills
Repeated shaking with chills
Muscle pain
Sore throat
Headache
Loss of smell or taste
Therefore be aware that a combination of any of these nine symptoms could imply coronavirus infection. These can also possibly be seen in influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), or any other respiratory virus infection.
But sometimes combined infections are known. There is a study in JAMA (research letters) that revealed that 20.7% of positive SARS-CoV-2 had other pathogens as well.

The study from Stanford University School of Medicine
David Kim et al from Stanford University School of Medicine analyzed the results of 1217 specimens taken from 1206 patients.
These specimens were tested for SARS-CoV-2 and other respiratory pathogens. A total of 116 or 9.5% of the cases were positive for SARS-CoV-2. 24 of these had mixed infections.
Of these, 6.9% tested positive for rhinovirus/enterovirus, 5.2% had associated respiratory syncytial virus, 4.3% were positive for other coronaviruses besides the SARS-CoV-2, and over 3% had some type of influenza.
Besides new symptoms, it is also stated that the course of coronavirus is highly variable. Some infected people have no symptoms at all.
Some present mildly, others have moderate symptoms, while some get so gravely ill that they need a hospital stay.
And some of these go on the ventilator for respiratory distress and impaired oxygenation. While some die. The mortality rates, also vary from 0 to more than 10% (as in Italy).

Additionally, some rare symptoms seen are stomach ache and diarrhea, eye symptoms, or urticaria or hives as the first manifestation of coronavirus. But the symptoms and signs could be misleading.
The only confirmation is by using a cotton swab up the nose of the throat and checking it for viral RNA or antigens. The symptoms may come up two to 14 days after the inoculation.
