During this time, she was on seven different forms of government assistance. From 2008 to 2016, she was a single mom without child care doing jobs like house cleaning to raise her child.

“I hope they feel validated as well. It’s so rare that people in poverty have an accurate portrayal of their life on screen or even in the media. Of course, Alex (the character based on Land) is a White woman who is working a job that is mostly done by people of color, so my experience isn’t necessarily representative of most people doing this work.”

More on her life

In 2019, her memoir Maid: Hard Work, Low Pay, and A Mother’s Will to Survive debuted in The New York Times. It made it to the bestseller list in 2019. She revealed that her daughter learned to walk in a homeless shelter. Talking about her memoir, Land said,

“I really wanted more people to know this story. … The memoir made me furious that we fail her as a country.”
