Stephanie Land had a long journey to get to the top! She got down on her hands and knees to scrub a toilet and had dreams of becoming a writer. Due to her abusive relationship and lack of family support she dealt with lots of hardships.
During this time, she was on seven different forms of government assistance. From 2008 to 2016, she was a single mom without child care doing jobs like house cleaning to raise her child.
Talking about people in a similar situation as her Stephanie said,
“I hope they feel validated as well. It’s so rare that people in poverty have an accurate portrayal of their life on screen or even in the media. Of course, Alex (the character based on Land) is a White woman who is working a job that is mostly done by people of color, so my experience isn’t necessarily representative of most people doing this work.”
