A student visiting an art museum in South Korea ate a banana that was part of a work of art by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan called “Comedian.” The artwork features a banana taped to a wall and is currently on display at the Leeum Museum of Art in South Korea.
Noh Hyun-soo, a student at Seoul National University, took the piece from a museum wall. The artwork was a banana duct-taped to the wall.
Noh peeled and ate the banana, then replaced the empty peel on the wall after removing the tape.
During the incident, some people in the gallery yelled at the young student as he approached the banana, but then everyone went silent after he ate it.
When questioned about why he ate the artwork, he responded very casually, saying that he was hungry because he hadn’t eaten breakfast.
“I didn’t eat breakfast, so I ate it because I was hungry.”
According to Korean broadcaster KBS, he believed that Cattelan’s art was a form of rebellion against authority and thought that his own actions could be another form of rebellion against that rebellion.
After approximately 30 minutes, the museum staff replaced the empty peel with an uneaten banana. A museum spokesperson said:
“The student told the museum he ate it because he was hungry.”
The museum did not take any special action, and Cattelan did not comment on the incident. The banana is replaced every two to three days as part of the exhibition, which runs until July 16.
“It happened suddenly, so no special action was taken. The artist (Cattelan) was informed of the incident but he didn’t have any reaction to it.”

This is not the first time someone ate the banana
Cattelan premiered his artwork “Comedian” at Art Basel Miami in 2019, where it sold for $120,000. Another two versions were also sold, with the third priced at $150,000.
However, artist David Datuna ate the third version as part of a performance piece called “Hungry Artist.” In an interview with The Guardian, Datuna explained that he wanted to take the banana to another level and add comedy to it.
“I began to think: ‘What can I do with this banana? How can I bring it to yet another level?’ And how to do it also with comedy? “So I ate the banana. It is something deeper.”
The Cattelan exhibition at the Leeum Museum will be open until July 16, so if you plan to visit, you might want to bring a snack in case the art makes you hungry.
